>>5021514 There is a lot of research behind the original research, but at best it still is only an approximation, and should only be used a guide, and not a defining statement of what a person is like. have fun reading this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Myers %E2%80%93Briggs_Type_Indicator >Although popular in the business sector, the MBTI exhibits significant psychometric deficiencies, notably including poor validity and reliability. The fun part is with enough knowledge of what it tests, one can skew the results to any one of the types. They say you can't do it, but anybody with enough brains, and psych training can do it.

>>5021514 >>5021591 Maybe the best part from the criticism section: >For example, MBTI advocates theorized that scores on each MBTI scale would show a bimodal distribution with most people scoring near the ends of the scales, thus dividing people into either, e.g., an extraverted or an introverted personality type. However, most studies have found that scores on the individual scales were actually distributed in a centrally peaked manner, similar to a normal distribution, indicating that the majority of people were actually in the middle of the scale and were thus neither clearly introverted nor extraverted. Most personality traits do show a normal distribution of scores from low to high, with about 15% of people at the low end, about 15% at the high end, and the majority of people in the middle ranges. But in order for the MBTI to be scored, a cut-off line is used at the middle of each scale and all those scoring below the line are spuriously classified as a low type, and all those scoring above the line are given the opposite type. Thus, psychometric assessment research fails to support the concept of personality type, but rather shows that most people lie near the middle of a continuous curve. Which is why some now use Xs for those near the middle of any of the scales. I love this quote: >"Most personality psychologists regard the MBTI as little more than an elaborate Chinese fortune cookie..." >"The interesting -- and somewhat alarming -- fact about the MBTI is that, despite its popularity, it has been subject to sustained criticism by professional psychologists for over three decades. One problem is that it displays what statisticians call low "test-retest reliability." So if you retake the test after only a five-week gap, there's around a 50% chance that you will fall into a different personality category compared to the first time you took the test."

These personality type tests are akin to horoscopes. The psychological community has yet to accept this test as even plausible, and psychology is a soft science at best. People who take it are only looking to put a label on themselves so they can feel like they are in a special club.

>>5022485 Because, as psychology has shown, people love to categorize phenomena. Anything that lets us classify "reality" in a few handy boxes is relieving to our brains, which use such techniques to save on quite limited processing power. Our brains are delightful, but anything that speeds up the electro-chemical computing without too heavy a sacrifice in accuracy is well-appreciated, evolutionarily. Since "personality" cannot be accurately assessed in a very short time frame, even wildly inaccurate tools are acceptable, and appreciated.

>>5022391 Interesting that it flipped the two trait pairs (I/E) and (N/S) that I saw as most solidly indicated on the MBTI. The thing is I'm not really an ESxx, and also not really an INxx either. I think the problem is I'm just to close to the mid-line ( >>5021185 ) for all of them to really fit into the system. That harps back to >>5021674 >most studies have found that scores on the individual scales were actually distributed in a centrally peaked manner, similar to a normal distribution, indicating that the majority of people were actually in the middle of the scale and were thus neither clearly introverted nor extraverted. which means there are many possible personality types not properly represented because they are the combination of supposedly opposite traits. The system is too simplistic.

>>5025175 When you get into cognitive functions, the system becomes anything but simplistic. Everyone uses S, N, F, and T. It is just a matter of what order, and in what manner (Si or Se? Ti or Te? This makes quite a bit of difference). If you do the research, it also explains why some people can look like another type, especially if they're unhealthy. It explains pretty much everything that people criticize. Introversion and extroversion can blur when there is a strong second function. Some _e functions are actually more introverted than others and vice-versa. Like Ne. Many ENTPs test as INTPs. That's easy to explain if you know what this stuff really means. Most people are content to just use shitty tests like humanmetrics, believe the letters only have one meaning each, and dismiss the whole system. Among people who know type, though, humanmetrics is actually considered among the worst on the Internet.

>>5027273 The letters don't mean why you think they mean. Everyone uses everything. It's a matter of order. J/P simply tells you which function is extraverted, and I/E presents the order. I doesn't mean on will necessarily be a shut-in who never talks to people. There is variation. All it means is that they will have a preference for their primary function, but they will use E function, too. P and J have similar thing going on. They just say what functions will be introverted and which will be extraverted. This gives a brief rundown http://understandmyersbriggs.blogsp ot.ca/2012/12/the-8-cognitive-funct ions.html . It shows how functions stack, too. Everyone uses all 8 functions. The first 4 are on a conscious level, the last 4 are on a subconscious level.

>>5029540 "Unhealthy" means "mentally unhealthy". It's tough to type people who are schizophrenic, narcissistic, or sociopaths. Typing serial killers is considered a challenge. Things like sexual orientation, gender identity, and sex (including intersex) don't matter. I had an intersex ex, and she was very easy to type (INFP, with explosions of Fi all over the place and a very Kurt Cobain-ish type of personality). And, no, trans people will not change type during any stage of transition. If you've studied this, you'd know full well why typing as "INxx" is impossible, so I assumed that you're either a beginner or that you really don't understand this stuff. To be typed accurately, cognitive functions are a must. Going letter-by-letter can be a starting point, but you will need to examine the functions to be accurate. You could try http://www.cognitiveprocesses.com . You could also try some of the stickies on sites like typologycentral and personalitycafe, but be careful. Check the people's sources.
