Now that we have gay marriage legalized across the nation, how long until straight people start complaining about pride saying "you got your equality, why are you still doing it?". inb4 they start saying "There's no more homophobia in america" they way white people say "there's no more racism in america"

>>4556498 Yes, I am. Pride is an outlet to express your sexuality and meet others like you. There are plenty of straights out there who "don't mind homos, but don't want to see them". Thus, pride parades. If queers were accepted without any stigma there would be a lesser need for such a flamboyant event.

Homophobia and transphobia are social issues, and there's little if anything that can be done about that from a legal standpoint. Regardless, there are some legal challenges that LGBT people still face: >Housing and employment discrimination in states that don't have hate crime legislation. An employer or housing provider can turn you away just on the basis of being LGBT. I believe some jurisdictions do have special protections to prevent discriminating against people based on race or religious belief, but sexual minorities are excluded. >Although I believe trans people can be formally diagnosed with gender dysphoria / GID and given HRT and SRS in all states, some states won't allow trans people to change the gender on their driver's license or birth certificate, even after SRS. >Same-sex couples cannot adopt in some states. >Gay and bisexual men are deferred from blood donation on a yearly basis if they've engaged in any same-sex activity during that time. It doesn't matter if the activity did not include anal sex, or even if protection was used during the encounter. >Gay and bisexual men cannot be organ donors. >Trans people cannot openly serve in the military because the military regards gender dysphoria as a form of mental illness, even though the DSM-5 specifically does not. >Age of consent and statutory rape laws apply differently to same-sex partners in some states. >Some states continue to pursue unconstitutional legislation, such as Tennessee's "Don't Say Gay" bill.

People were already saying it before this weekend. Shit, even in LGBT circles gays have gotten shit for being more "acceptable" than the other letters. Marriage was only a step forward, next major goal is to get recognized as a protected class to help protect against discrimination.

>>4556287 one question for you guys. I know the constitutional argument was equality, but what exactly "marriage" implies in the United States? because where i live it is specified that marriage is between a men and a women and this is why the legal system can't do shit about it. Did the United States simply ignored it and considered two men, or there was nothing specified in the first place?

7 hours later 4557639 Anonymous
>>4557622 Nothing in the constitution specifies marriage is between a man and a woman. That's the point.

7 hours later 4557700 Anonymous
>>4557639 where i live, they tried using the excuse that 'men and women' was some kind of example, but that nothing forbids same sex. It does make things easier if it doesn't say anything. But it is hard to think there is no law at all talking about marriage. Are you sure there is no real definition in any law at all?

>>4557504 topkek anon >>4557622 marriage is tax benefits, death benefits, and actually being recognized as family by the law

7 hours later 4557843 Anonymous
>>4557700 There was. It was called DOMA and it was struck down as unconstitutional in 2013. You also have to realize that the US is a federalist system, so laws defining marriage do exist at several state levels, however the federal level trumps them.

8 hours later 4557990 Anonymous
>>4557812 >marriage is tax benefits, death benefits, and actually being recognized as family by the law no, i mean. The part talking about marriage on the laws specify who you can marry? because if the texts are just that, you can marry your daughter, or yourself. In other thread one guy explained to me it depends on the state. But it is still strange, the constitution telling that "it has to be equal" doesn't mean it is automatically legalized according to the state laws. I mean, there is nothing actually saying it is legal yet, no kind of document explaining how it should work, and applying the own state law is just strange since it still talks about "men and women", i believe.

9 hours later 4558432 Anonymous
>>4558072 didn't get from that it was federal level. Anyway, what the happens now? i mean, if there is only local laws about it and no federal law, does that really mean it is "legalized"? or will they just use the state laws even if it is using some different term for marriage?

9 hours later 4558462 Anonymous
>>4558432 As I said, federal laws trump state laws. It's been legalized at the federal level--states are obligated to comply. What a state's constitution says about the definition of marriage is now completely irrelevant.

11 hours later 4558798 Anonymous
>>4558462 what i understand is that the state laws is just partially against the constitution. The procedure is still the same, but the part where it states who can marry is null. Doesn't that create some kind of... hole? i mean, it is written on the constitution only "equal rights", not who can marry who. It may or may not damage the procedure or some prohibitions. It would require further knowledge of what exactly part is null.

11 hours later 4558805 Anonymous
>>4558798 by the way where i live there was a problem like that of some kind. They were refusing to marry people of the same sex arguing some problems in the procedure. The courts had to force them to register, threatening even with jail.
