Lived in both, they're tight. More like two provinces than two separate countries. Australians can be dismissive about NZ at times, but otherwise their connection is strong and I gather it's very easy to move between the two for work. Something like close to half a million Kiwis live in Aus.

Here's the thing.
They're rivals in sport.
They at times culturally outshine which secretly embarrasses us that's why we steal the people behind it to claim as our own.
We politically at pretty much along the same aims.
And if any country in the world was invaded I wouldn't give a fuck, yet if NZ was I'd go there myself to fight and expect nothing in return.

nz was supposed to be another australian state, but they declined. both are the same people: british immigrants (purely british immigrants, until very recently). same institutions, basically same political parties, etc etc. but it goes much further than that because of WW1 and WW2 and the Anzac Corps. we're twins basically but australia is the bigger, cockier brother. and as others have said we take the piss, friendly rivalry, etc. There is also basically dual-citizenship between countries.
Also anything good that comes out of NZ is able to be claimed for Australia by Commonwealth law.
I look at em as little bros, in that whenever they achieve something or even outdo us in something I feel proud of em. So for example in Young's classic Rommel biography, he says Rommel considered kiwis even finer opponents than Australians. but i aint even mad

I'm not sure yet whether the isolation would work in our favour or against us.
On the one hand, we couldn't easily bring in supplies/ammunition/weapons (presumably they'd blockade us), but on the other hand, it would be quite expensive and time consuming for the enemy to bring supplies as well.
Not to mention that this country is already relatively well armed and we could easily take to the hills indefinitely.
