Oy, /int/. I have the option of studying a foreign language at my university. I've been considering Arabic and Turkish, and I'd like your esteemed input on this matter. Both will compliment my Islamic Studies minor, and I'd love to eventually learn both, but what should I pursue at the moment?

>Arabic It's getting increasingly important on the international stage. A good chunk of the Earth is inhabited by Arabic-speaking peoples (440 million-ish native speakers). However, there are enormous differences between dialects, so I don't think everything will be universally intelligible wherever you go. My father's side is Palestinian, and learning the language has always been in the back of my mind. The university I go to has a pretty strong Arabic program, and it offers introductory, intermediate, and advanced levels of Arabic.

>Turkish Definitely not as dispersed as Arabic is (70 million native speakers), and is pretty much limited to Turkey and pockets of Turkish minorities elsewhere. From what I understand, Southwestern Turkic languages are mutually intelligible, and so I'd be able to speak to an Azeri or Turkmen with knowledge of Anatolian Turkish. My mother's side is some mongrel hybrid of Azeris and Avars, and so I feel sort of compelled to learn Turkish because of this. It's not as useful as Arabic, but I plan to immigrate to Turkey once I'm finished with school. My university only offers introductory levels of Turkish, so I'd have to study it on my own eventually. Thoughts, /int/?

It's usually a side-thing, and there is no really motivation to continue or improve. If you're that serious about following the Turkish side of your ancestry, then obviously. You'll need it so might as well start now so you'll be less shit when you move there. Otherwise Arabic is more financially/politically/whatever relavent.

22 min later 6013547 Anonymous
I would say that Arabic will be more broadly applicable to your chosen field, however as others have pointed out, Arabic dialects differ greatly. I once worked in an Arab restaurant and the chef spoke Syrian Arabic, the owner spoke Egyptian Arabic and I spoke Modern Standard Arabic. I'll just say that although after a while we began to understand each other with ease, at first there was a lot of trial and error. So, just know that when studying Arabic, you'll be looking to study Classical Arabic, Modern Standard Arabic, then begin to look at the general dialect groupings (Gulf, Levantine, Maghrebi, Egyptian) and then the individual dialects. Studying Arabic at this level is quite a task, but if you stick at it you'll be fine.

25 min later 6013603 Anonymous
I'd go with Arabic, OP. I don't know if there are any perks of knowing Turkish, but as for Arabic, there are many.

31 min later 6013684 Kebab
>>6013547 I see, and is Modern Standard Arabic generally understood throughout the Arab World? Is it based off a certain dialect? I was under the impression that Egyptian was the most "influential", but I'd be more interested in the Levantine dialect. >but if you stick at it you'll be fine. Good to hear. I made a half-hearted attempt to learn it a few years ago, but got intimidated by the alphabet. >>6013603 Well, I plan to immigrate to Istanbul in a few years, so there's one "perk". Arabic does seem like a better choice though.

>>6013684 >>6013684 MSA iis based on the Classica Arabic used in the Qur'aan. Most educated Arabs speak it, and the majority of Arabs living in and around cities or towns will understand it.
