I am currently doing a networking and security course as a degree, My aspiration is to start up my own ISP in the future, Not free, but no bandwidth limitations (fair use policy shit), one package as cheap as I can make it with as high a speed possible.... The hardest part of running your own, completely independent (except for connection to backbones) ISP is laying the cable, unless you're somewhere rural where no one minds if you dig a trench through their property. Dealing with mnicipalities and digging up streets or using utility poles can be incredibly expensive. I believe most independent ISPs just resell service from Comcast/AT&T etc.
