>For the first time in history, humans have drilled a hole into rock on Mars and are collecting the powdered results for analysis, NASA announced Saturday. >Curiosity drilled a hole that is a modest 2.5 inches (6.35 centimeters) deep and .6 inches (1.52 centimeters) wide, but that holds the promise of potentially great discoveries. (Watch video of the Mars rover Curiosity.) >The most advanced planetary robot ever designed now is a fully operating analytical laboratory on Mars," John Grunsfeld, NASA associate administrator for the agency's Science Mission Directorate, said in a statement on Saturday You know, I gotta ask... What is it about America, that makes Americans want to consistently progress humanity? I mean think about it, while Americans are doing this, the UK is throwing a hissy fit, and debating on whether or not to leave the European Union or not. But anyway, what drives America to be the country that has done more in the past 80 years, than an other country has in the history of human civilization, in a comparable time? Is it all the genes from literally every country around the world being mixed together, creating superhuman genes?

nd you know...I think I might be on to something: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JVAK ghnzxzM ^ Stephen Fry (British Icon) discussing why White Americans are so god tier; he theorizes that it's because their ancestors were the ones who were alpha enough to leave their old shithole, thus it's in their genes to take risks, advance humanity, etc.

>>31464007 America has some of the most fertile land in the world. We have more natural resources than any other single country. It took the entire might of the USSR to come close what just one country could produce annually. As a result of our abundant resources we were able to rise to be the most powerful nation in the world. From WWII onward, the US has been looked up to. Held as the standard for the free will. No one can tell you what it takes to be French, British or Spanish. You are just born that way. You become an American by embracing a set of ideals and striving to them. America was founded on an ideology not a language or a religion. It's that ideology that drives us forward, even at the expense of others. Being American is about striving to be the best.

>What is it about America, that makes Americans want to consistently progress humanity? We don't. I mean, some of us do, and there are some fine enlightenment ideals enshrined in the founding documents of our country (though there was a long, dark 150 years or so where we forgot a lot of those ideals). But greed is largely the driving force behind American innovation. The need to open new markets to feed a growing economy and population through expanding industrial and agricultural capacity leads to a taste for geopolitical domination. The need to project political and military force regionally, hemispherically (as in the Monroe Doctrine) and, now, globally, demands investment in basic research and in the application of that research to warfare. Private industry benefits, as well. The Space Race wasn't the result of some yearning to better humanity. It was an international pissing contest between two superpowers to prove to the world who had the superior science and technology. The applicability of space research to missile technology and (eventually) space-based weaponry is obvious. There are cultural factors at work, too, of course. Americans tend to be optimistic about the future, about the role of America in the world, and about the ability of technology to solve our own--and other people's--problems. But the extent to which cultural factors are separable from economic factors is probably unclear at best.

Americans do shit for one simple reason: We're a new country. Britain, Germany, Africa - Everybody who lives there has a rich history. America is basically "Some guys got on a boat and told the king to fuck off, abolished salvery after a war, then got dragged into two giant wars, which somehow left them rich." We're new enough that we just kinda do shit just for fun, because we're bored. The governments in almost all other places are extremely old and confusing, but we're a fresh start. I fucking love America, hard working people, wide open country, nice roads, and all manner of wonderful shit we as a culture as so god damn ungrateful for. You know what? Living in America sure beats the hell out of some other places in the world. If we survive the test of time, we survive, if we don't, hopefully humanity progresses as it should. Hopefully we don't fling the world back into the dark ages. But thats ultimately up for US to decide, are we going to move forward? Or get into pissing matches over ideologies? In the end are we just going to continue being Dumb apes? I've made my choices, my plans, life ain't perfect but fuck it, I ain't got nothing better to do but fucking try. However, I still see that notion as a long-shot in terms of its explanatory power.
