Is my CPU suppose to run this hot? Room temp: 26c CPU idle temp: 42c Prime95 100% load: 84c Running an i5 750 OCed to 4GHz its being cooled with with: scythe-usa.com/product/cpu/038/scnj2000_ detail.html and i just re-applied a bead of arctic silver 5 is this normal?

Did you take off the plastic off the metal base on the cooler ? How much paste did you apply ? DETAILS

My i5 get to 80c when I fully load it for a while. But I'm using a $30 cooler because it's the only thing that'll fit.

>CPU idle temp: 42c >Prime95 100% load: 84c A bit high for a 4Ghz OC. Mine idles at 37c and full loads at 77c. My ambient temp is pretty much the same as yours. Reapply your TIM and this time, don't use the whole tube.

>>31007599 Ya done goofed, more paste.

10 min later 31007661 Anonymous
>>31007635 i really did not use alot at all...

10 min later 31007674 Anonymous
>>31007661 you used the right ammount, its not the paste

12 min later 31007701 Anonymous
>>31007599 Don't fucking spread the paste, you might as well not even use it if you're going to be a dumbfuck like that

12 min later 31007710 Anonymous
>>31007674 what could it be? my case has very good air flow, 3 fans in the front and 2 in the rear/top

13 min later 31007714 Anonymous
>>31007599 Probably air bubbles. Remove your heatsink and CPU, and clean all of the paste off with a little bit of isopropyl alcohol. Nail polish remover will only work if it is Acetone-free, otherwise avoid it at all costs and get the real stuff. Now apply the paste directly onto the CPU, then press the heatsink into it. DO NOT LIFT IT UP NOW. Once the little pea sized ball of paste has been squished, you can not let it make contact with air. Now screw everything down and you're good to go. It will apply itself perfectly.

14 min later 31007737 Anonymous
>>31007701 why not? whats wrong with spreading it?

15 min later 31007757 Anonymous
>>31007661 well, what's your casing? Do you use one fan or two? Are the casing fans turned on? Do the extra cables inside your casing blocks/impedes air flow?

15 min later 31007772 Anonymous
>>31007599 >bead of rice spread evenly with a credit card That might be it. Even if it's not the MAIN problem, you will get it running a few degrees cooler. This is the first step in the tree of troubleshooting your problem, you really have to do this before you start moving on to other steps.

>>31007646 >>31007661 >>31007674 >>31007701 >>31007714 Nothing better than a good old-fashion thermal paste debate.

17 min later 31007812 Anonymous
>>31007737 Air bubbles make the paste less efficient. You probably have more problems, but you gotta go step by step and get this out of the way.

18 min later 31007834 Anonymous
>>31007774 ...there's no debate. Everyone seems to be on the same page here that he used it incorrectly.

19 min later 31007849 Anonymous
>>31007737 the whole point of using thermal paste is to fill small gaps between the CPU and the HSF. If you spread it beforehand, the spread might not thick enough to fill the gaps in places with thick gaps. Let the pressure of HSF do the job of spreading the TIM for you.

19 min later 31007850 Anonymous
>>31007812 what more problems?

20 min later 31007872 Anonymous
>>31007850 We don't know yet. Troubleshooting computer problems works like a tree. You have to start with what we are telling you, and then branch out and cover every possible solution. You can't skip anything or the whole thing is fucked.

21 min later 31007883 Anonymous
>>31007850 how the fuck should we know if you didn't tell us the results of the thermal paste situation first?

22 min later 31007896 Anonymous
>>31007872 since i cant re-apply the paste right now, what would be your next step assuming the problem continues?

23 min later 31007916 Anonymous
>>31007850 You are one of those people who are shitty at being helped. You tell them how they can get started on fixing it and they just go "TELL ME ANOTHER SOLUTION THAT WILL FIX IT INSTANTLY WITH NO FEEDBACK OR DETAILED DESCRRIPTIONS OF MY PROBLEM!!!!"

25 min later 31007957 Anonymous
>>31007465 your idle is high and your load is almost too high. It should turn off at 90.

27 min later 31007979 Anonymous
>>31007896 You could always try not over-clocking it. That's always an option.

28 min later 31008008 Anonymous
>>31007916 This. To people like this i usually just say they shouldn't have bothered with PC at all and buy everything from Apple instead.

30 min later 31008063 Anonymous
>>31007916 >>31007916 as i said here: >>31007896 i cant do it right this second, so instead i wanted to know what else i could try instead of doing nothing until i could applying the paste again, by then this thread would 404 and i'd have to do this all over again.

30 min later 31008066 Anonymous
>>31007896 use more one fan in your HSF. Push-pull config usually cut off a bit heat from your CPU. you should see 3-4c drops in a well ventilated case.

32 min later 31008101 Anonymous
>>31007896 Try opening your case and use a fan to blow fresh air inside ? It could be bad airflow. Or your cpu voltage is too high ? Try lowering it step by step until its not stable anymore and bring it back up a little. But really.. just reapply that motherfucking paste correctly.

35 min later 31008172 Anonymous
>>31007599 NEVER spread the paste. Place a rice to pea sized dot in the middle, then let the pressure from the heatsink spread it. Spreading it manually ruins the air tight seal, and can create airbubbles (which insulate).

35 min later 31008173 Anonymous
>>31007979 i could also try not having a computer, that would also solve my heat problem, although it wont be what i asked about now would it? >>31008008 apple computers are an over-priced aluminum casing housing the same parts that i have in my computer, you have to be an idiot to buy them, and an asshole to recommend them to others if your not paying for it.

38 min later 31008225 Anonymous
>>31008173 Fine then, bitch about your processor over-clocked to 140% its specification with standard heatsink cooling running a little hot when stressed and shoot down every piece of advice that's given to you. What do I care.

40 min later 31008267 Anonymous
>>31008173 I've been thinking about it... Is your overclocking on auto mode (or whatever it's called in your bios) ? Like I said above, It could be your motherboard setting the cpu's core voltage too high. Lowering it by setting manually would normally drastically lower your temps but if you lower it too low you cpu could become instable and crash (altho this is not harmful for the cpu, unlike overheating).

>>31008225 that's the thing though, i've only been give one piece of advice, to re-apple the paste, i didnt shoot down this idea mind you, i said i'll try it, when i'm able to, i just asked what else i could try in the mean time since some anon suggested there are probably more things to try. i'm either getting trolled or you guys have some serious reading comprehension problems.

46 min later 31008389 Anonymous
>>31008267 sorry, i didn't see your suggestion, but no, its not on auto, i overclocked by starting high and lowering the voltage until it wasn't stable anymore

53 min later 31008508 Anonymous
>>31008355 >getting trolled now who wants to do that? We're here as a bunch of intellectual technology enthusiast. We're literally neckbros here.

>>31008389 Damm, I'm thinking hard... How hot is it outside ? If it's cold you could try setting your comp outside for a moment or use air conditioning. Just to see if temps lower linearly. It *could* be that the cooler itself is not part of a good batch ? I'm getting tired... going to sleep. Hope you find a solution to you problem.
