I was looking into building an HTPC for my living room, mostly I want to use it for emulators and roms. Is there anywhere to read up on good builds/wireless controllers/front ends etc etc

XBMC forums aren't bad. Regarding emulators and controllers, look into advanced launcher and get a 360 controller. >>31006297 Preteen Hardcore Probably not what you're after. Unless you are.

>>31006323 Would a 360 controller be sufficient for pretty much every emulator? What should I do for storage? A small SSD with a large HDD, or maybe a few small HDDS in raid? Is there a video card available that will not only have HDMI out but also have components and coax?

Is it a bad idea to use a keyboard with PSCX2?

>>31006401 >Would a 360 controller be sufficient for pretty much every emulator? No. I would get a controller with a good D-pad like the PS3 controller. >What should I do for storage? A small SSD with a large HDD, or maybe a few small HDDS in raid? SSD for main program and emulators, HDD for everything else > Is there a video card available that will not only have HDMI out but also have components and coax? Not really. Most modern card has HDMI, DVI, VGA and Displayport or similar combination. IDK why you would need that though.

>>31006401 Hon, yo going way too fast. What do you have setup right now? A NAS already? If not, you might want to look into that or get a HDD. I'm not sure why you would want to even go RAID with it. Depending on your router you can go wireless or ethernet. Youtube 1080p will work fine on almost any router, but when torrenting you might as well have a nice speed. That is, if your internet connection is demanding a good router to begin with. Not sure what exactly you want to be emulating, but I assume it's not going to be PS3 games. Actually, you provide no information at all and I don't think you know much about what's what already.

>>31006401 I emulate nes > wii and everything in between. As for controllers, I don't have a physical wiimote, but plan to get one. Everything else I use a wireless 360 controller for. Has the advantage of controlling PC games and steam flawlessly too. I have a dedicated server that stores roms, the HTPC has a 64gb ssd with the OS, metadata and emulator files. Server is just jbod drives pooled with mhddfs. For AV out, I just use HDMI from card to TV. You might be able to get older cards with coax out, and an adapter to component.

>>31006230 Use either a Wireless 360 Controller with the dongle or a DualShock 3 with Motioninjoy so that the computer thinks its a 360 controller. Don't use anything other than these unless its a special controller like a racing wheel/arcade stick. A good emulator frontend is Hyperspin or you could just used Advanced Launcher in XBMC. As for specs just get any modern quad core+ cpu like a 2500k, 2570k, 8350, etc and a decent gpu anywhere above the specs of a 7770 if its just for emulation and media. If you plan to do real pc gaming as well I'd suggest a 7850/560 Ti/660 Ti or better. If you want to be super cheap and don't want to emulate anything better than a N64/PS1, get an original Xbox and use RetroArch or CoinOps. Then just build an extremely cheap htpc rig or use an AppleTV 1 with Broadcom HD chip with a large HDD running Crystalbuntu or an Android stick/box for media.

>>31007147 PS3 controllers are honestly even more of a pain in the ass. Sure they use bluetooth, but the drivers are terrible because Sony doesn't officially support doing it. Just go with either the xbox one over here >>31006989 or get Logitech's controllers

>>31007238 Ok back to 360 controllers and wii motes How easy are raids to work with? I would like to run a couple drives in raid to speed things up, or just a single SSD.

55 min later 31007450 Anonymous
>>31007340 SSD will be faster, but will lack capacity. Your system probably won't be throttled by the storage, just get a big HDD for video/roms.

>>31007340 raid isn't too hard to set up, butttt you're probally better off with just one or two big drives (two if you're raiding for backup and not just speed). Windows 8 (assuming you'll buy windows) has a nifty feature called storage spaces if you don't even want to deal with raid https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J7R6fU0T n6g
