the essence of the American empire is that you pretty much have to accept the rules of international corporatist capitalism (WTO, Patent law, etc) and the hegemony of (mostly) America-based multinational corporations; otherwise they'll isolate you and make you suffer or worse.
the rest pretty much takes care of itself (abuse, exploitation, servitude, stealing of resources, etc), and the CIA and co. are always there to help out
