Hello /fit/! I'm joining the Army soon, already spoken to a recruiter etc etc, flying out to Germany soon to enlist (US citizen living in UK) I'm hoping for an 11x OPT 40 contract, which is a guaranteed shot at RASP as far as I understand. In order to become a Ranger I need to be a strong swimmer, unfortunately I'm terrible at swimming, I can maybe swim 25M with a terrible Front Crawl swimming form. I splash fucking every where and I'm scared to swim mid pool in case of drowning (lol) so I stick to an edge. This isn't fucking right, if I want to be a ranger I need to show commitment and motivation. I need to learn how to swim adequately so that if I ever need to swim, I can fucking swim (decently). I go to a gym that has an Olympic sized pool but every swimmer there seems pro as fuark, swimming in lanes and not stopping at all. Due to my poor swimming form (you may as well say I cant swim at all) I'm incredibly nervous to get into the pool and practice (mostly due to the fact that I cant hang around on the edge if I need to). Can anyone give me some tips on how to swim? Whats the best way to begin? I haven't got the time / money to get swimming lessons. Whats the best swimming form for beginners? Whats the most effective? Does anyone know of any good instructional video's / reads, the ones I've found aren't making me any more confident. TL;DR - Need to learn how to swim, plz help.

Why do you live in the UK? You get paid more and have a better life in the US.

>>17006046 I moved to the UK in 1999 with my British mother, she was in the process of divorcing my Father and I really had no say in it at the time (I was 4) the reason I'm joining the US Army is because I've always wanted to serve, I recognize myself as an United States citizen and I want to serve the country I was born in, this will also allow me to move back independently

OP if you have the money id actually shell out some money for a swim class, look around and you might find a couple week long course. Trainers are usually pretty good and if you want to be a ranger yes you have to be good swimmer. Then after you learn, swim your ass off till training.

look up side stroke and use that for the test since you will be in uniform/boots for the test. just go on open pool time and practice it. no one will notice you

After being absolutely unappreciated and treated like an idiot for AIT, you'll stop thinking about Ranger school and start thinking about your ETS date. Just, for the love of GOD, dont sign a 6 year contract.

>>17006338 What why? I'm guessing you didn't enjoy your Army experience?

Look up Shinji Takeuchi. Basically 40 year old man with no swimming experience became a world class swimmer within a few months of training due to developing his unique style. Read up on him and watch his videos on youtube, you'll certainly learn better and faster at someone who got to the best from nothing.

My friend got a job as a swimming teacher and he had never swam more than 25 meters either. He told the employer when applying, they just taught him and he learned really fast. Talk to someone behind the counter in your local swimming hall and everything will be fine.

Go to the pool and and practice your form. If the lifeguards are bros ask em for tips etc. Most lifeguards are on swim teams for high school or college anyhow. And most US special forces require you to do combat side stroke, so get really good at normal side stroke then move to combat side stroke. You should be able to swim laps with that stroke for a good hour. And if you're too scared to do all this then you honestly don't belong in special forces. Not even trying troll you.

OP if you're not a high school senior the odds of you getting an option 40 are pretty low. Especially if you've been living out of country for years.
