Death is a fisherman of souls waiting patiently for his prey. while new players wont really know to seek us out to stop the corruption. those who have previously experienced our peculiar brand of misery know to attempt to find us. (as an aside, while anyone in your IP pool can see the sign you will only infect three people in NG+ and beyond. while there are ways of infecting NG players none of them are consistent i can only hope that DaS2 allows us to be a little more proactive in the infections like invading a corrupted world to hunt our prey rather than waiting for them to come to us.)

It depends on the weapon's Occult modifier. I think everything in the Occult upgrade path has a modifier of 110, meaning 10% extra. The only naturally occult weapon I can think of is Velka's Rapier, which also has a 110 modifier.

I hid in a corner near it where most of its attacks don't go and ate lots of grass and used shields/ranged attacks. Most large enemies in DeS and DaS can be AI-exploited through proper positioning and striking from a distance, notably pretty much every dragon in DaS.
It ruins the fun on a lot of fights to do this though, ex. fighting Tower Knight with Soul Arrow from the walls.

Okay so I've been playing Dark Souls for a good two weeks now. I've got some questions about the lore that I cannot seem to answer.
- What the fuck is the whole 'Undead' thing about? Is it some zombie outbreak? The game feels pretty post-apocalyptic so I would not be surprised.
- Why are there so few friendly NPCs? I understand this is a game before it is a story, but thus far I have met about 15~ NPCs, many of which have gone missing/hollow, everyone else seems to be insane or simply awaiting death. Why have they lost hope? Why aren't there more of them?
- Does civilisation continue elsewhere? Are they affected by the end of the age of fire?
- Who is the guard who throws the hollow into your cell? Is e human? Are there ANY non-undeads in Lordran?
Story-wise this is the bleakest fantasy game I've ever played. Lordran seems to be post-apocalypse or soon will be. Was there a point at which the Gods were fighting against the Undead hordes? I understand so much about what happened in the Age Of Ancients, but I am clueless as to what is happening around the time of the game.

I see a lot of people swearing that it's IMPOSSIBLE to play with keyboard, but that's just blatant misinformation, and might discourage those who don't want to invest in a controller. I've had no difficulty whatsoever with keyboard controls after spending ~10 minutes getting used to them, not in PvE or PvP.

The Undead curse is linked with the dying of the Fire. Probably. The end of the world is slowly coming and the Undead are just a symptom.
Demon's Souls (the game before Dark Souls) is unrelated. It's in a different world. That said, there are very few friendly NPCs because most humans wouldn't dare go to Lordran. It's not a place where people live. Think of it as the ruins of this world's version of Valhalla or Mount Olympus.
Yes, there is civilization elsewhere. Places like Astora and Carim send their Undead to the Asylum and some of them make it to Lordran.
The knight who throws the key into your cell is Oscar, though his name is never said in-game. He mentions going hollow as he dies, but it's not certain whether he was human or undead when you first met him.
Surprisingly enough, many of the "answers" you can find in Dark Souls are found in item descriptions. Try reading the descriptions of keys and items you find, especially items like Humanity, various souls, etc.

Hard to know. The curse of the undead is linked with Humanity and is most likely something devised by either Gwyn or his sons in order to allow perpetuation of the flame. Bonfires are made of Undeads but we don't know much. We could speculate for ages about this topic.

There are plently of noted places. Vinheim academy, Carim, Astora. They deal with the undeads but should be populated.

The friendly NPCs you meet simply haven't gone hollow yet. They all come to Lordran for different reasons, but the majority of them are undead, so it's a sort of hopeless situation.

Ring the bells and free the undead from their curse. so you get around to doing that. you find out from frampt that you are the "chosen undead" the one who will link the fire and continue the age of fire, but if you talk to kaathe before hand he tells a different story and here is where things get a little complicated.

and part 2: the age of fire
The Age of Fire is the time of the gods starting from when Gywn first found the lord souls along with izalith, nito, aand the pygmy (he'll be important later so keep him in mind). Essentially they with they help of their first creations, the giants, and seathe kill the eternal dragons and create anor londo. Time passes and their power for some unknown reason begins to wane the sisters of izalith try to recreate the first flame to counter this and fail, becoming demons in the process although a few survive. Nito decides to try to conserve his remaining power by sleeping. Gwyn goes to the kiln to link the fire to try to extend the age of fire.All to prevent the Coming Dark (sound familiar?) and by this time everyone has forgotten about the furtive pygmy. while i haven't decided for my self whether the spread of humanity was either a side effect or the cause of the weakening fires. they are related and this brings me to the age of Dark.

Part 3: the age of Dark
While some of the dialogue makes it seem like it's related to the spreading of the abyss, to me, it has a different meaning. The Age of Dark is the Age of Man or Humanity. Remember the pygmy and the last lord soul? i hope you do. The furtive pygmy seemed to have disapeard after he aquired the last lord soul which at this point i am assuming it is the name sake of the game the Dark Soul. And the abyss is just a manifestation of that soul. What about humanity? Those are shards of the Dark soul that reside in each human. In essence The furtive pygmy was the progenetor of all humans in this game giving them a part of his soul and as they grew the balance of power shifted and the bonfires weakend. At the end of the game after you defeat Gwyn you are given two choices, although only one is explicity shown to you. the first is to continue the Age of Fire and return power to the Gods; The Second, To leave and usher in The Age of Humanity. The Choice is yours.

I died 3 times before defeating him, but goddamn it was a fucking awesome fight. He was really difficult, not for the damage which was kinda subpar for a final boss, not for the speed, it was for the fact that he doesn't leave room to do anything. I could barely heal and a lucky dodge and Elizabeth's mushroom saved me. He was kinda easy to parry but damn if i hadn't to run away for like two minutes to get that last parry. And then i killed him with the Abyss Sword's 2HR2, and he was going to grab me if i missed.
Probably my second favorite boss, after Artorias.

For the last time, the Gwynevere you meet in game is an ILLUSION. The real Gwynevere is more than likely NOT that huge, and fled Anor Londo shortly after her dad linked the fire. What's a good strategy for fighting Manus? Cause I currently have no idea what I'm doing. His melee attacks cover so much of the screen that I have clue where to go, and when he uses magic I just roll around like a chicken with my head cut off.
I've been trying to stay close to him, since he pretty much destroys me at mid-range. I still don't know how to avoid that 5-hit combo, however.
I've also tried summoning Sif, partly because I thought it might help but mostly because I thought it would cool. Unfortunately, that seems to only make the fight harder.
I'm SL69, using a +13 winged spear at 30 dex, a +12 grass crest shield, and a +8 wanderer set. I buff the spear with GMW at the beginning of the fight, but can't find time to reapply it after that. I've also tried being cheap by blasting him in the face with dark bead, but even that doesn't do a whole lot of damage.

Manus is the toughest DLC boss, so don't be surprised if you're having trouble with him. Everyone does the first time.
You have two options- poise tank his ass, or stay light and rolling. I suggest rolling. Try using a Crest Shield to block his shit, it's 100% with high magic resist. When he does dark magic on you, one of two things will happen- it'll go out and then in, or rain from above. If it goes outward, roll towards him. If it rains from above, roll away from him. You can also go pick up the Silver Pendant if you have a Skull Lantern or other source of light- just try looking around the bottom area of the township with one out.
His combo attack is a BITCH to dodge, even if you sideroll. I've never been able to consistently avoid it, so I don't know what to tell you there. Sif is also worth summoning sometimes if Manus chooses him to attack, but it's a crap shoot if he does or not.
If you get REALLY upset fighting him and you just want to pass the guy, there's a secret you can abuse. Please use this only as a last resort, because it's cheap as fuck and will take away from your sense of accomplishment. Manus spawns before you enter the room with him. You can shoot him with arrows from outside and kill him that way. For exactly where to aim, look it up on youtube.

The reason they're considered gods doesn't even really matter. The fact is that they were the gods of the setting, and should you choose the Dark Lord ending, you successfully overthrow them and assume the role of one yourself.
No word on how long you hold the position, though.

I nearly did the same thing. Got Super-Ornstein to about 40% health but slipped up and got killed.
Really though, I think the only reason I got through the first part was because I kept Ornstein behind Smough the entire time, and he never decided to chuck lightning at mef or some reason.

If you are looking for genuine hotspots the only zone would be township. Anywhere else is a gamble, even in Kiln you'll rarely see yourself getting summoned. It's easier if you got a friend and farmed it at demon ruins, if the host kills himself first and then the dragon dildo kills himself as well a second after, both people get scales, doubling the farm.
