GW2 and FFXIV are both in deep shit because the MMO market is a fucking mess and no one has a fucking clue how to make a game people want to play for an extended time so everyone eventually reverts back to WoW until the NEXT game comes out. Blows its load with 1-2 new gimmicks and is then ultimately abandoned.
If FFXIV was ANY other title and did not have the words "Final Fantasy" in it the game would have been DoA 2 years ago. The one reason it is limping along is diehards, FFXI orphans, and hope. Actually... none. None of those things were in FFXI you fucking retard. FFXI and WoW were like Pepsi and Coke at their time. WoW has had a smashing success but FFXI over time was still one of the most popular MMO's. Now imagine that Pepsi was about to release a brand new flavor that would completely replace traditional Pepsi... and it tasted exactly like Coke but had the after taste of raw beef and a red can.
FFXIV should be doing everything it can to NOT be like WoW since it was one of the few games that held a candle to it while being different.

WoW had some good things and some bad things.
XI had some good things and some bad things.
A realm reborn draws on both in equal measure. After all, you're class-locked in WoW, and the Graphics were designed from the start to be cartoony.
Stealing the content finder is a great idea, so is the quest-based leveling. Grinding the same lizards, crabs, whatever for eternity was terribly unfun.
This is less of a WoW clone than it is an XI/WoW hybrid.

FFXI death was hasten by Abbysea which completely obliterated all the sense of progression and buildup 7 years of expansions and community based gameplay. That is why the numbers tanked like fucking mad the year it came out. Which was ok because FFXIV was supposed to be our new home. They made FFXI easymode shit so people could jump onboard at the last minute and run through all the content. I was fine with that.
Then FFXIV flopped like fucking mad. Part because it was rushed and in all angles of fairness, a badly made game. The biggest problem though was how much changed from FFXI. They made it emulate Abbysea's trend of progression which was a diluted hallow experience that took cues from WoW. Now ARR is taking that a step further. Instead of going back to what FFXI good and generate the most profit SE has even claimed from a Final Fantasy title.

They are mutually exclusive. FFXI was a tedious, time obliterating, hard as fuck, dominating hellwhore mistress with a 14inch barbed double dildo. It was worth it though because the community feasted on punishment and ultimate reward. The payoff and the friends who you went through hell with made it all worth it.
If you make the game easy. All is for naught. There is no way in FUCK I would played WoW if it had half the shit FFXI made you work through. The entire point was the game was difficult but conquering that game was more rewarding then the challenge. You cannot have both.

Sitting around for hours in Jeuno/Whitegate was incredibly boring. You know what's more fun? Having the option to ACTUALLY level or do missions. Change is not the devil. Waist high walls should not be barriers, getting help with storylines or endgame parties should not be something you have to set aside your whole day for. It'd be nice if the grinding mobs in a party thing was a viable option though. I personally don't mind it. After an hour or two you don't really notice how bad the grind is. Just put on some music and let the grinding happen while chatting with your LS or whatever. I actually enjoyed it sometimes.

I hated WoW. It paled in comparison to XI in so many ways, but your head is shoved so far up Tanaka's ass you can't even see the light of day. If you liked sitting around all day to be unsatisfied, go down to the DMV.
XI had a beautiful story, an amazing world, and astounding music. The grind sucked, the sitting around forever sucked, the waking up at 2 am to get outclaimed on Fafnir by the shell with the latest bot sucked, and the thirty Dynamis - Xarcabards without a chapeau or armlets sucked.

Plus slower leveling (sitting in one place for hours on end) + a much more lax combat flow that relies on autoattack and fighting a single mob (which also allows for skills and debuffs to actually matter) means you have time to do something that FFXIV is starved of.
Talking. Community building. Joking around. Chatting in party and the linkshell. It took a bit to noticed but I finally figured it out after being in a FFXIV party for a few hours. It is nothing but SPAMSPAMSPASMSPAMSPAM as many weak enemies as quickly as possible on timers that cycle as fast and you can mash them. Never a moment to rest. Never a moment of peace. Could never just sit back and enjoy a quick bout of banter with my party.
That is one of those 'mutually exclusive' elements of the game I was talking about. The pace of combat and the time it takes to reach a job cap directly influences other aspects of the game. Like how much people get to talking and bonding with friends and strangers alike.
Take that a step further and make solo leveling a viable alternative. Faster leveling all around. Quest hubbing and content finder. You are killing so many opportunities for players to interact with one another. Leading to a weak and disconnected player base. You have to stick to one formula or another. A combination leads to abortions and dead games.

I am falling back in my seat anon because I WAS a PUP! I mained it. It took that automaton humping fuck to every single events I could. Now PUP was a tough gig because so very few people played it well and the difference between a bad SAM and a good SAM is good damage and insanely good damage. Where as a bad PUP was doing less good then a double hammer WHM DD. So it got a very bad reputation. Also BST was the anti-party. Taking BST was what you did when you decided you hated other people and would rather party with the wild things. Not a bad choice just different.
My post stands. The only people who didn't get exp or make any headway in FFXI were those who didn't try hard enough. Sounds like an elitist dick thing to say but FFXI filtered out people like you who just couldn't make the cut. If you made it to 75 in FFXI you either learned how the game and the people function together or you got some seriously good friends.

I would rather reap the benefit of a solid as fuck community that was helpful and rather they focus their efforts elsewhere. Like exploration and story, which they did. The ceiling may have been lower then other MMO's could theoretically go but most other games rarely ever get players to operate at that level. Those fights are championed by less then 2% of the server and bitched and ultimately nerfed by everyone else who finds them too hard.

This. The only reason I played FFXI as long as I did was because of the friends I'd made during the slow leveling process. A strong sense of community is an important thing in an MMO. It's hard to create that in a game like WoW where you don't ever have to talk to anybody to do anything anymore. You can literally queue up and never say a word and get anything done in that game these days. Which I'll admit isn't always a bad thing, but the game never kept my attention for as long as FFXI could back in the day because it lacked the social aspect.
MMOs are great because you're in a massively multiplayer environment, but for some reason modern MMOs are trying harder and harder to disconnect the players from each other by making it to where you don't need to know anyone to get something done. You just kind of go do it. I feel you might as well be playing a single player game if the only interaction you have with other people is seeing their name float above their head.
That's not to say I think games like WoW shouldn't exist, some people like that style of MMO including myself every once in awhile. I just don't feel like all modern MMOs, especially FFXIV, should be striving to be a copy of WoW.

That was MAYBE 10% of the time. The other 90% of the time people just operated like silent robots, even when they said "Congratulations" you could tell it was just a programmed response and they didn't really care. And while you may not be able to practically afk during combat in XIV, anyone who has semi-decent typing skills should be able to hold a conversation just fine while partying.

There is, it just takes patience and a bit of luck. Certain mobs agro by sight, others by sound. Some are even True Sound. Knowing which is which will make things easier, if you choose to hoof it.

Half true. They Grandfathered in many elements from FFXI while trying to inject WoW-style elements as well. The two simply do not mix. That is why the entire leveling system was fucking garbage in the first place. Had they kept a very rigid FFXI formula with some alterations to account for new technologies it would have fared much better. At the very least they could count on 300k player base that would come from FFXI to stick around. Not the biggest MMO but in this genre even surviving is an accomplishment. They got big eyes and bad programmers though and the entire thing is one big ass clusterfuck.

If ARR plays like WoW, i will be happy. I enjoyed the way WoW played (at least the vanilla version) and I felt it was an evolution in MMORPG play. Calm your analdevastation because i'll explain: I played FF11 before WoW. I even bought the Japanese version and played that while i waited for the English version. I had fun with FF11 but it was exhausting to play because it required so much commitment and waiting to do simple things like leveling up.
WoW was much easier to play and flexible and dare i say - more fun. However, WoW paled in comparison in terms of storyline, music, and art direction, when compared to FF11. That's why i hope ARR will be the best of both world.

Only Nael wanted to, he was being controlled by him all along. Bahamut was presumably awakened when Midgardsorm, that huge dragon serpent thing from the opening, died along with that Garlean ship, you can see a ray of light going to the heavens and Ifrit and Titan coming out of it, Bahamut has always been the King of the Summons. There's also a bit of lore saying how around that same time that happened, Dalamud glowed red for a couple of seconds.
Of course Tanaka couldn't have planned all of this, but it's kinda neat how they adapted everything and it kinda sorta fits. The 7th umbral era also has no element associated with it unlike all the other previews eras Bahamut is always non elemental

That was Louisoix. He is not considered human, as he is an archon, a benevolent incarnation of the twelve, Louisoix is specifically Thaliak, the Scholar. He was the one who knew what Dalamud was, a twelve-constructed prison for the Primal King Bahamut, when the Allagan civilization (now extinct) summoned them to help fight him in I think the 4th or 5th astral era. He was the one who got the entirety of Eorzea to pray to the twelve, summoning their power to try the second imprisonment after he broke out of the first (events in the trailer).
This was unsuccessful due to Nael Van Darnus feeding Bahamut anima through the transmitter and generator that you destroyed in the "United We Stand" battle. He was draining it from the planet's aetheryte network/lifestream and the leftover ceruleam crystals in the mor dhona region after the Midgardsormr/Imperial Ship crash explosion (ties in from all storylines and the grand company story). It was too late to save the day though, and Bahamut was strong enough to break out and resist the next attempt, then megaflare and go about his way.
Louisoix had a backup plan that he never told to anyone. This was hinted at in the story and talked about, a mystery to what he had up his sleeve, even if he was secretly the villain. He knew when all was lost after the twelve failed and transported the self-insert group of heroes into the future. He smiles as he dies because he knows he'll at least save the future. Five years later, the heroes appear, and 2.0 story begins.
The trailer is the culminations of all storylines and events in 1.0, and perfectly syncs up with the music and lyrics of a three year old song. It's amazing.

The servers themselves are holding up fine is the thing. That's more of a client issue that will likely be addressed when the next phase of alpha testing, the machine testing, comes up. The point of the whole event was to give an explanation for completely recreating the maps, among other things. They're in jp onry alpha testing right now, but they'll be opening up to international alpha testing on the 26th and beta testing sometime in January/February.

Many of the concepts from the original carry over such as lore and basic maps and such (although local maps will be much better).
Whether it's a new game or not is up to you, I guess. Personally, I'd say it's mostly new since the core gameplay is going to be completely reworked with a new engine.

Hate management is gone since every DD caps hate in no time at lvl99, and Voidwatch battles that matter are a temp-spam fest, since without Fanatics up (Physical damage immunity), most of the NMs will wipe your shit in no time at all.

The evil empire decides our gods need to be killed, so they invade, wreck a city-state, then get their asses handed to them by Midgardsormr and retreat.
You see a meteor shower that somehow lets you see peoples' memories and understand beastmen speak.
The empire comes back and starts killing beastmen and shit so they start summoning their primals (ifrit, etc), so the empire start putting together some big evil plan so the 3 nations resurrect the Grand Companies to defend themselves.
The Amaalj'aa summon Ifrit, so Louisoix (the old guy) sends you out to kill them. Nael van Darnus (the 1.x final boss) shows up and kamahameha's Ifrit's crystal and talks about how the land will be cleansed, etc.
The Grand Companies investigate and Cid finds out that they're going to use some ancient technology from the long dead super-advanced race (there's always one of those) to bring the lesser moon, Dalamud, crashing into the continent.
The imperials start stepping up their invasions, sending scouting robots known as Magitek Vanguards to fuck shit up.

Well, ARR is 5 years after 1.0, so it's not like the story is going to carry on directly from where it left off.
My guess is that either the intro cutscene will explain what happened at the end of 1.0, or it'll be explained during the story quests via The Echo..

The Ixali succeed in summoning Garuda, and once again, you're sent out to kill her, it turns out the empire wanted you to do that, her essence is absorbed by Dalamud due to a device created by the empire, housed in their new stronghold Castrum Novum.
Seeing shit is hitting the fan, the grand companies put aside their differences and band together to fight the empire.
You go in there, wreck the thing, and piss Nael van Darnus the fuck OFF and he goes fucking insane and walks through blue fire and officially becomes Dalamud's emissary. Despite Gaius's (the leader of the 14th legion) objectons, he goes full on "Wipe out everything" mode. Gaius wants to conquer Eorzea, not destroy it.
The combined forces of the grand companies send you up to the magical floating island to fight Nael, and when you beat him This isn't even my final form

He gets empowered by Dalamud and in the cutscene develops these crystal wings with Dalamud as a halo in the background and begins shouting holier than thou shit while fighting him. We've been down this JRPG path before haven't we folks?
Once you beat him again, his magical floating island falls apart and you ride back down on the airship and are hailed as hero of the land... but you were too late. Turns out Dalamud is on a crash course and Louisoix tells you the only hope now is to beseech The Twelve (the gods of the game) to stop it before it's too late, so you run around to the ass-ends of the world and pray to some rocks.
Then the End of an Era video happens.

To add to this, the battle you see going on in End of an Era is between the Eorzean Alliance of the Grand Companies and Darnus' crazed, loyal soldiers, the VIIth legion. Old man is trying to prevent Dalamud from coming, but the legion is attacking the ritual site.

I don't think there are any right now of actual good gameplay. There was one if I remember right but the guy got scared and pulled it down. Also keep in mind that the alpha is JP onry atm. I'd say expect to see real game play footage sometime near the end of this month when the rest of the world gets in the alpha.

So for those of you in alpha how do you feel about it so far? I'm considering buying this, I fucking love MMOs but I'm almost always disappointed. I don't mind grinding that much, what I'm looking for is balance, simplicity, and lots of party based gameplay. Only MMOs I kind of liked were MS and RO before they turned to dogshit.

What. Because of shared XP when you just hit something people team up to do shit all the time. In terms of player actions its the most social MMO ever, see someone fighting a few monsters, you help out because its mutually beneficial. See someone else turn up to an area where you are doing a quest you dont think fuck someone here to steal my xp and loot you fight with them.
In terms of player communication; No one talks. Ever. That sucks. You co operate but it isnt jolly co operation with people you bro up with.
The main problem I had with GW2 is you unlock everything so early that there is no drive or things that change up combat in a major way as you progress. I hope it doesnt do that
