2 hours later 15072391 Anonymous
>>15072039 Well that's an understatement. Mini-campaigns in Kingdoms had their maps a zillion times better and eye-candyer and there were GODDMAN FOUR of them. 2 hours later 15072665 Anonymous
>>15072381 Rome was a huge leap forward after earlier Risk-like Total Wars (I still love Med 1). Rome had better unit variety and unit balance, new diplomacy mechanics, trade, forts, big amount of character role-playing, interesting era, great music. Medieval II was just as good, but you could feel that it was just Rome with better graphics and other units. Both Rome and Medieval II are bases for spectacular mods, though.

3 hours later 15074491 Anonymous
>>15074078 I'm not one of the guys who played it when it first came out or played Shogun and Medieval before it, Rome is just the best because every faction feels different. Medieval 2 introduced better gameplay elements but removed a lot of the variety. When you play Rome, you have dozens of nations to play as with tons of different units. Medieval 2 gives you essentially 2 nations, european and middle-eastern, and then Empire and beyond give you one nation and even fewer unit types

So, how challenging is playing as any other faction besides Rome?

Keep your generals near by to prevent them from running away. Also never end the battle right away. Always continue and chase down the fleeing enemy with your cavalry.

I'm attempting to replay the tutorial to see how different things are and I've run into some problems. At the beginning of the Land Tutorial where I need to shoot some Tea drinking scum with my cannons, I've spent 5 minutes waiting for the cannons to actually hit someone but they keep shooting waaaay past them or like 5 feet in front of themselves before colliding with the ground. One time I actually managed to hit someone, and the enemy began fleeing with 27/30 remaining soldiers. >>15148353 Pedites Extraordinarii show up at your starting regions when your barracks are at level 4 I believe. They're expensive to train but oh so worth it, they're basically your answer to enemy Elite infantry for a few reforms. Equites Extraordinarii are good but what you really want on the cavalry front is Gallic Noble Cavalry which you get by capturing a Celtic province (I recommend Mediolanum and Masilla on the coast near it), installing a Client State (type 4 government) and building up the Foreign Levy barracks to level 4 or 5. While you're upgrading those you should pump out a ton of Celtic Slingers which are fantastic skirmishers and garrison units. Also build a bunch of Rorarii while you can, they disappear at the Polybian reforms and they are the best garrison troops in the game.

ATTENTION EVERYONE WHO IS NEW TO THE FRANCHISE, PLEASE PAY ATTENTION TO THIS The AI is not interested in playing smart, if you see the AI throw away its soldiers in blindly suicidal attacks on you, it isn't because it thinks its going to win. It does that simply to cause you the most casualties it can with minimal effort. The AI is not a bunch of factions, bickering within themselves. The AI is one thing, it is focused on killing you and only you. That is its purpose. So when you see the AI behaving badly, don't think "God these programmers were retards." After playing Napoleon I have some feedback and the like. To me the ideal total war game CA could make would by Victoria: Total War - with a Grand Campaign starting in 1840 and ending at the end of year 1900 - basically most of Vicky's reign. Napoleon took what Empire had and vastly improved it - building combat was more effective (It was important to hold buildings and guys wouldn't just stand bored as fuck at the windows while their pals were being massacred) and buildings provided a great combat bonus - thus - I would have to use physically strong units to storm buildings which was great. If Victoria were to take the field combat of Napoleon - the vast expanse of Empire and the Naval combat of FotS (with added boarding) They would have the potential to make one of the better total war games to come out.

Medieval 2 has the best campaign, closely followed by Rome. Rome >best time period >unique factions >civil war >however it eventually turns into 2 massive factions battling each other and gets boring >unrest makes it impossible to have a proper empire Medieval 2 >although factions may be similar, there is still plenty of diversity >improved diplomacy >crusades and jihads >religion and the pope >mongols and timurids >the great plague In the end I think that because of the mongols/timurids/the plague medieval 2 has much more eventful campaigns and therefore more fun.

(the blackwatch units playing bagpipes, british grenadiers playing their own march on fife and drum.) fort battles were a terrible mess and shouldv'e been left out entirely.

So are they gonna stick with the assault option open on the same turn you siege a town? They said during the amphibious assault of Carthage the Romans pile out of the boats and start building their siege equipment right there If they keep it will you like it? I've spent turns fending off attacks, and the only ground I've gained is in the Holy Land (I sacked the cities, razed their builduings, and cut a swath across the middle east before sending my Crusader and his army back home in the hopes of ramming his cock up the ass of the Italians). One thing that's pissing me off is the Italian city states are trying to fuck the shit out of me, and the moment I laid siege to their cities the Pope was all "No, bro. No." The Milanese and Sicilians have 0 and 1 favor with the Pope, respectively. I had 6 until I started fighting back. I feel boxed in. The pope is fucking with me. >>15302356 It's due to your unit costs. They get divided up by your cities and taken off the top from the city's income. In later games they subtract it from your total income. It's a purely cosmetic thing.

If you've never played much of EB in Northwestern Europe, it's interesting to know that this city is the best general training place on the map. The traits and druid ancillaries that your faction members pick up are amazing and numerous. You can send a fresh 16 year old here and if he's Sharp/Charismatic/Vigorous he can pick up 6+ influence/management by the time he's 20. And for generals, they can get 3 or 4 Druid ancillaries that improve after battle healing. It's an amazing place to hold.

While browsing I was reminded of the fantastic times I've had playing Medieval II: Total War with friends years back. >Play as Holy Roman Empire with two friends. >Take turns being field commander and ministers. >Put on outrageously silly german accents. >Develop a penchant for spies and assassins. >Murder anyone not German. Spare not the princesses, the diplomats, generals, traders, etc. >First Kaiser dies. >Look at his name. >He went from Heinrich the Chivalrous to Heinrich the Terrible or Tyrant or something similar. >One of his retinues is Grandmaster of Assassins >FUCK YES >Send assassins out across Europe. >Murder everyone. >Finally target the pope. >Send 6 different experienced assassins. >After 2nd assassin, start chanting "Killa da Pope, Killa da Pope" over and over in a sing-song fashion. >All die due to the standing pope being much older and experienced. Their deaths only make his popeyness stronger. >"Killa da Pope, Killa da Pope". Cinematic of a german assassin in the rafters of the Vatican firing a crossbow bolt at the Pope. >MISSION SUCCESSFUL >FUCK YES >Stuff papacy with German archbishops and murder all foreign bishops. I CONTROL THE PAPACY, I CONTROL THE CHRISTENDOM Pic semi-related.
