For the most part, this is true. Besides, you can't remove grinding from an MMO. That's what keeps most people playing.

Game money. You can't actually make real money in the game unless you're an illegal gold seller or something, since there's no RMAH auction house or anything like that.

It is partially true. People are allowed to make money by playing the market, but there were some items that were grossly underpriced by mistake and exploiting shit like that on a mass scale will get you banned. People could appeal and delete their items to have their ban turned into a temporary suspension though.
Also, the rumours are very eaggerated. By official Anet stats, the percentage of people banned for exploiting the economy is very small compared to the number of people banned for botting, being grossly offensive in public chat, and having offensive character names. IIRC only like 50-60 people in total got banned for abusing mispriced shit.

It's neither. It's as obtuse and painful as the grind in league of legends. The crafting grind is far worse than wow and they've intentionally inflated the prices of the more rare materials like blood and claws and scales.

You can fully gear out in rares at 80 with 3g total. 6/6 armor 2 rings 2 accessories amulet 2 weapons offhand. A full set of yellows is good enough to get you through any and all content
also do try to make a distinction between the 'grind' to get to max level parity, versus the grind for super cosmetics. Maxing crafting professions is grindy because its a step towards getting legendaries, which were intended to be ultra grindy to begin with.

One that that bugs me about GW2 is the poorly written quest dialogue.
The main story just ASSUMES, that I'm young or a child when my characters face is quite obviously at LEAST 50 years of age +.

I stopped pve levelling at 40 to catch up in tailoring. I'm level 65 now and i still can't make lvl 40 gear even though i spend every cent i have to get the mats.
It seems like the only viable option is to rush to 80 and then farm shit from Orr and sell that so i can finally get past the lvl 25 crafted items.
It's worse than wow. You could afford the mats to level up before the expansions. Now it costs 20 silver for just a few of the lowest level monster mats because of how rare they are.

Alternatively, play multiple characters. For example if you have one with Armorsmith and one with Tailor, they can supply each other with materials they don't need.

A few questions: Does the Charrzooka count as a "weapon kit" for engineer trait purposes? For that matter, would my mortar be affected by the explosives line?
Though you lose the bonus stats, the power on the kit abilities is listed as being far higher; is the damage per use of a skill a percentage, or added to your attack stat, or otherwise used in a way that brings the equality I've been observing back, or is it just that I'm too low-levelled to see a significant difference in the mid 20s?
Finally: mesmers. Their traits seem to affect really tiny portions of their abilities compared to most others; even their class mechanic is chopped up into clones seperate from phantasms and the various shatters with their own skills: how viable is this, or is that why I'm seeing less and less of them?

I've been playing Heartseeker for a while instead of my regular tanky combat rogue.
It's good for finishing people off, and if at any point in a battle you're hovering around 60-70% health, you'll die as soon as the thief spots you. Fortunately, the same goes for him. Unless you're an elementalist, in which case I'm very sorry, you can delay the finisher long enough for someone to sneeze on the thief and crit them for 20k. Glass cannon thief can't stand and fight one on one against any class, all they have is damage.

I've tried one and have some issues.
First, the Greatsword at long range, its autoattack has no conditions. This sounds like a minor issue, but everything else a mesmer does basically inflicts conditions or fucks around, and the bonus damage is extremely minor. It would be more appropriate to call it a penalty as the enemy gets closer, in fact.
Unlike every other summon, your illusions stop existing the moment the target they were cast for drops. The bigger the group [yours or target] you're dealing with, the bigger the problem. Unlike every other 'summon', turret or AoE, these get fizzled before they even get to act with frightening regularity if you're in a party. The clones basically plink out no damage and dissapear from a light breeze, to the point where even hitting mindwrack as soon as they're appearing has no guarantee they'll ever get to blow.
The walls are kinda small and pretty useless in general, the healing abilities kinda suck, and they nerfed the random-boon signet so it doesn't buff you out of combat anymore, making it worthless to even own in short fights.

Add on to WvW? what can you honestly add on to it, new keeps and shit? Who the hell at arenanet thought giving every single boss monster this shitty buff "Unshakable" was a good idea?
It's not fun when every single cc you can think of just fails to work and the gameplay suddenly shifts into two dimensions where all you can do is dodge and deal damage. Suddenly 50 different weapon sets are just completely useless. No surprise that most of the viable weapon sets turn out to be the ranged one, either, which are the only weapons most people use when it comes to later bosses. Oh, and want to be good at dungeon runs? Well, you better hope you specced for Condition/Toughness, because that's the only viable build. Also, you can forget about stealth or clones, because every single boss has a 1200+ range AoE that will kill you if you get hit by it.

Ectoplasm only became the unofficial currency because gold was literally worthless. You could actually hit the gold cap and still not be able to buy anything. This was only solved when Arenanet decided to have chests require keys that cost more than the loot you'd get out of said chests, and then implemented loot scaling that decreased the amount of gold and vendor trash you got from a zone if you farmed it more than three times.

I have a ton of problems with this game that will probably never be addressed because arenanet is stubborn and they're defended by an army of drones.
My biggest problem is that they follow traditional MMOs rules even if it's to the detriment of the game; they still have things like lock-on projectiles, very small leash ranges with aggressive health regen, combat reducing your movement speed, mobs being stupidly fast and other stupid design choices MMOs generally have that aren't coming to my mind right now.
This game and other action oriented MMOs need to think about their game as an action game instead of an MMO. If you're playing a game like devil may cry you don't expect the enemies to ride your ass and hit you with their basic attacks every time unless you CC . You don't expect every single projectile to be locked on to you and be completely undodgeable by regular strafing/movement. You don't expect enemies to go invulnerable because they have no way to reach you or because they just randomly decide to drop agro.
These kinds of design choices are outdated and need to be reserved for MMOs with less emphasis on combat.

The basic idea is to just spam as much AoE as possible while switching to whatever element is most useful at the time/is off cooldown, adding Arcane skills for more damage (I might switch out either one for Arcane Shield if it turns out I need more defense), and using Mist Form as my panic button.

The problem is that WoW still has millions of subscribers, and every developer is still trying to steal a piece of their pie. They've started to learn that a straight up clone will die quickly, so they've started to make clones that have a very slight difference, like GW2 and its combat and events. Now this could actually work, but only if the game is actually good and implements all the design features that MMO developers have learned over the last eight years. Arenanet didn't do this. GW2 feels like a game that should have been made in 2007, not 2012.

Fuck, I got 60 levels on my Thief and now thinking I'll reroll warrior.
Just seems that if I do anything but offhand pistol for my Thief on unshakeable mobs, I'm wasting my time since black powder is so incredibly strong. Likewise, on bosses I'm shoehorned into being a blast finisher dispenser with a shortbow because it's just so incredibly much better than 2x pistol.
The weapon really do seem ill designed. It's the only class with a resource system so there needs to be reason to use all the skills. Instead we have 2 or 3 skills we use for each pairing (including our auto attack) and the other half of skills are just wasted space.
That, and trap utilities suck, shadow refuge is so good that if you don't take it you're hurting your team, 3 skills are just an extra blind, venoms are boring "put on when off CD, no exceptions", and 3 shitty shadow steps.
Lots of good stuff for PvP. But PvE they are just boring as shit because unshakeable mixed with initiative cause for their options being -extremely- limited.
At least with Warrior my weapons all work different and I have a little more variety in utility.

After server transfers stop being free and a few autobalance periods have passed the balance will probably be acceptable, but until then it will stay completely fucked. That's why you keep seeing any server that does really well in one round getting utterly destroyed in the next.

I just hit 55 on my Mesmer and I'm getting ready to craft myself some of that three-stat gear (Knight's, Carrion, etc.).
I've been going sword + sword / staff with full power/precision until now, and it's been going fairly well, but I keep hearing how good Confusion is in PvE and I'm considering making myself a bunch of Carrion/Rampager's gear and grabbing a scepter + focus instead of the sword + sword.
Should I? Or is melee the way to go? Full disclosure, I'm having fun in melee, but I haven't really tried any other style yet.

Don't spec for confusion. It's decent damage but it doesn't come up that often given how ridiculously slow most mobs attack.
Stick with Sword/Sword or Sword/Focus alongside a Staff, put on some Carrion/Rampger's gear if you have at least 20 points in dueling with Sharper Images and other such traits. The Condition Damage will help you in almost every way.

Nope. It's been awesome. With the first trait in Dueling and a high crit rate you have pretty much permanent Vigor, so you can essentially dance around enemies doing AoE damage with your slashes. Plus I drop clones everywhere, enemies attack them instead of me, and I have bonus Mind Wrack damage. It's been pretty great. I have to change to my staff sometimes--I spend 80% of my dungeon time with staff--but in general PvE and some dungeon fights melee is great.
But I'm also painfully aware of how fragile I am.

I'm not sure if I want to go back to WoW or just not play mmos for a while. I don't regret my purchase because with the no monthly fee I will pop in and play some sPvP (WvWvW is really not my cup of tea considering DaoC's was a ton better) now and again. I guess I really like the acquisition of new gear to make yourself powerful, because walking around Orr/dungeons these last few days to farm Karma/points to get different looking gear with the same stats as the gear I'm wearing is really not fun. The PVP is alright, but the limited skill selection is pretty bland and the Capricorn map is the worst fucking PVP map ever made ever.

I don't know if it was bugged, but the second major boss fight against Kudu has him sending out a fire golem that does a constant flame aoe shot that burns for your entire life and hits for 2.5k at level 60. the mob says that it only burns on attacks, but it was potshotting downed people and people who weren't attacking when the fight started.
It took us nearly a half hour of corpse running until everything i had was broken off me and my party and that was just the second of three golems the boss summoned. Thankfully the third golem wasn't as bugged.
Still ungodly horrible. It's a Dredge dungeon too. All you fight are fuck annoying dredge.
I cannot fathom that masochism that would drive someone to grind the explore mode for the gear. Not even looking steampunk is worth that hair pulling experience.
Final boss is neat though.

If you want to try a condition build, I'd suggest to play Staff/Sword+Pistol.
With 15 points in Dueling (but you should push to 20 minimum), your illusions will apply a bleeding condition on crit, which is pretty good with the duelist from the pistol skillset.
10 points mini in Domination for the 15% illu damage then dump everything in Illusion and don't forget the additional bounce trait for your staff.
You have 10 points to put wherever you want (I put them in Dueling.

Hopefully it was just a bug.
There was another part just before the boss, where you had to rescue and revive zojja so she could open a door to the boss room. Zojja is guarded not only by a large group of veteran steam machines and dredge, but the room also respawns dredge constantly until zojja stays alive long enough to unlock the door.
That was fucking awful. The entire instance gave me a sad face.

For storymode dungeons, be sure to grab the elixir kit. It's got solid control and support abilities tied to it. Also grab Elixir R. Throwing it is an AoE resurrect. You will need this even for just doing storymode.
For exploring/hearts/DE's I usually roll with Elixir B with the speedy kits talent to get to shit faster, Grenade kit and pistol shield as my weapon sets and Throw Mine to help keep shit back.

It's that the game is supposed to be fun. Doing things and completing goals is supposed to be fun. I do not find running the exact same instance killing the exact same mobs and bosses 40-50 times in a row to get a set of cosmetic gear that i could have just as easily gotten in 10-15 runs.
It gets dull, tedious, and boring. I don't want to play a game that i don't find fun. It would be nice to be able to collect all of the other dungeon sets without devoting over 1000 hours 2 hours at a time.
It's just not that fun or challenging.

So, what tips are useful to an engineer? Also general engie discussion. A couple of starter topics
- If you have the grenade kit, turn on auto ground casting at cursor. That way you can just mash your hotkeys without having to click a spot. Your regular grenade doesn't have autocast, but it also doesn't have an appreciable cooldown so you can spam 1 for days and do really good dps.
- Flamethrower is so good. Seriously. With flamethrower and grenade kits you will never need to use your guns
- That being said, what are the differences in engie weapon combos?
- What is the best healing utility? Atm I'm using the healing turret because you can just plant it down and forget about it. The healing kit seems better but having to juggle too many kits seems like it would be frustrating.
- What stat is best to concentrate on for engie? I'm thinking toughness atm because I use the flamethrower a lot.

Not that I disagree with you, I do agree, they ought to do something like what WoW is doing where you have these "challenge dungeons" where you're sort of assigned stats (I think that's how it works?), and a time limit, so you can never outgear the dungeon
As far as the repetition part, I expect once people learn to gear, gem, and use consumables to get the best effect that people will be able to do Explorable mode stuff really really fast, like 15 to 20 minutes fast or maybe faster via skipping stuff
