Do people actually care about Deaf people? I'm HoH (Hard of Hearing) and I have several Deaf friends and experienced Deaf culture. I watched several documentaries about the Deaf and there was one that caught my attention. It was a Dutch documentary featuring a girl in elementary who dreams to be in a Hearing school, her parents opposed this at first because they're afraid that she won't have friends, but eventually, they gave up and send them to a Hearing elementary school. The girl was approached by mean children who basically laughed in her face and you can really notice her feeling uncomfortable, and all that was part of the documentary. It's sad realizing how many people still can't accept difference. Everyone must be the same, that's the key to social acceptance -- it's sad, is it? Do YOU care?

so-called deaf culture is awful. i went to a deaf school for all of elementary school. I am not deaf, but the deaf school was right down the street from my house, so that's where I went. They treated me like shit. Not just the students, but the teachers too. They all had such bad attitudes. None of them deserved the gift of hearing.

I think they're normal people. I've always worked in industries with a high rate of hearing impairment as a hazard, and verbal communication is sometimes impossible in my work environment, so I've practiced sign language off and on just in case. I went to a rave in D.C. one time a few years back, there was a bunch of really beautiful girls from Gallaudet (deaf college). I guess bass vibrations in clubs are pretty sweet. They were chilling right in front of the huge subs. Picking up women at raves is usually hard as fuck because the music is loud. I sat down with this one girl that I was dancing with and she had a note pad and pen. It was actually pretty cool, got to know each other pretty well in a pretty short period, way more so than I would have if we were trying to talk over really loud music.

I used to go to a really podunk simple little community college, but we were known for our American Sign Language and shit centering around that. The professor is deaf, and he's actually really cool and understanding. Because he's a teacher, he's grown very used to communicating with non-deaf non-ASL speaking students, so he's incredibly skilled at reading lips. I had the pleasure of talking to him on a few occasions and he's quite an interesting and well-rounded man. I was going to pursue a degree in ASL, but for various reasons, I could not. So one night I was at this silly little goth club that I promote at (for those who don't really know promoting, I just walk around and talk to people, see if they're enjoying their night, socialize, get people on the dance floor, etc) and I was in the bathroom. I was very very drunk as I usually am there, and I saw a girl in a Japanese rope dress, something I am totally in love with. So I immediately stumble over to her and start groping her and freaking out about her dress, she starts laughing with me and sorta giving me deaf-sounding english while doing signs. Because of how interested I was in sign language courses, I just drunk spaghetti all over, I immediately start freaking out like OMG UR DEAF?? OMFG I LOVE DEAF PEOPLE!!! She looked at me and said "OMG ME TWO" And I ended up finally getting out what I meant to say, and she was just really cool and funny, and said she appreciated how interested I was in deaf culture. We started talking about my school, and she actually knew the professor, and she made the sign for 'asshole' and told me to just take courses online. Lol. Deaf people are sweet.

I'm pretty indifferent towards deaf people. If I met a really hot deaf girl who was totally into me I'd learn sign language to communicate with her. I don't see that realistically happening though. We're quickly inventing new ways to improve and/or cure deafness anyway. If deaf people want to stay deaf after we find a cure for it, fuck 'em. They can be ostracized for it.

Deaf and hard of hearing people can suck to joke with. They dont always get sarcasm and dont pick up on tone of voice. It makes them socially awkward even if people are trying to be nice to them. They can also be very needy because they are used to people going out of their way to communicate with them. I've seen several that just assumed someone would help them with whatever they are doing simply because they are deaf.
