What superpowers does a Math degree give you?

The ability to frown and lose faith in humanity whenever anyone near you talks about 'mindblowing' math facts and acts like a math 'nerd'.

>>6278539 The magical and mysterious ability to drive people away from you simply by talking about your university years. Watch in wonder as people cough, awkwardly look around and then say "Oh hey that's great, look I'll be right back I just saw.. um.. Sarah, my friend? Well I've got to say hi" only to never return. All this from a simple mention of your studies.

>>6278562 Don't let anyone kid you. A math degree is good for employment prospects, as long as you're not proud about what work you do. If you insist on being a "mathematician", job prospects are very slim. If you go be a computer programmer or some kind of manager or process consultant or analyst/report writer, you'll be able to have a good career on the merits of reasoning ability, work ethic, and showing up on time ready to pay attention and respond appropriately for four years, demonstrated by getting a bachelor's degree in math. Don't get an advanced degree in math unless you've got real talent. They do give those out, but it's setting yourself up for a life as a teaching assistant or highschool teacher.

>>6278539 an understanding of maths. maths is a condiment. its only good if you have something you can apply it with. it doesnt matter if you apply it with physics, engineering or chemistry, because it will radically improve your ability to understand those things. but maths by itself is pretty useless.

>>6278595 Probably not. Getting a bachelor's shows that you like math and you're hard-working and intelligent. Getting an advanced degree shows that you're dedicated to math and willing to make sacrifices to work with math. Being overqualified is bad. Employers have bad experiences with overqualified workers. They don't care about the job they're overqualified for, so they underperform. They leave at the first opportunity to go work for someone who doesn't even pay as much or offer the same benefits, just because the work is something different. So don't get an advanced degree unless you're confident of competing for the real math jobs.

The main advantage is that if you do one at a good university, you have a pretty legitimate claim to being more intelligent than most people. Anyone that bitches about how it's not leading you directly into a job is just being a dick, it's true but the job prospects are just as good as any good STEM degree, and you don't go and study maths for anything as mundane as job prospects anyway.

no srsly though, does doing a maths degree let you easily go in to physics or engineering? Or does it teach you some random shit that no one cares about, like my engineering degree? What's the point of learning lots stamp collecting in my engineering degree when a maths one just builds problem solving

What do your guys study sessions for a week look like? How often do you study, how do you study? I am a 26 year old going back to school after a previous bachelors in ling/Japanese.
