Can we get a poorfeels thread going on? I lost 30 bucks the other day and cried about two nights in a row now. meanwhile 30 bucks is dinner alone for most people.

>30 bucks for dinner Shit must be nice. I'm on the dollar diet. Not like McD's dollar menu. But I don't buy shit that would cost more than a buck a meal all together.

I know that feel. >Live in stereotypical black family, meaning no father. >I suddenly have to play the father figure role, even though I suck at it and have to deal with older brother figure role at the same time >Make $250.00 per bi-weekly paycheck >$210.00 after giving $40.00 to brother, so he has at least $20.00 a week (Growing up I was lucky to have $5.00 a week, I want him to have better than I did.) >$150.00 after I give ~$60.00 to my mother weekly. It's fuck all, but when you're broke you do what you can >$90 for myself to eat or enjoy whatever, after spending $60 on a metrocard to get to and from work, college, and home >$40 some weeks, because phone bill is $50.00 This shit sucks. I earn 250 per check and finish with like forty bucks.

>>9707888 You really need to start dumpster diving. It'll take a week or two to figure out the best dumpsters to hit so you aren't wasting your time, but once you know, you'll have so much good, nutritious food that you literally won't be capable of eating it all. I live across the street from a Subway, and I get about half my groceries from their dumpster. They throw out more bread than I can possibly ever use -- more than a whole family could possibly use -- and since I go every night just after closing, I usually get a big plastic bag of meatballs and tomato sauce, still hot. I have also scored thousands of cookies, hundreds of bags of fresh apple slices, a whole crate of bottled water, unopened, and wrapped, 10 pound bags of frozen cold cuts one day past their best before date. Seriously, dumpster diving is awesome. Not only are you saving yourself money, but you'll be eating healthier and saving food which would otherwise by going straight to the landfill.

I'm poor. I make about 750 euros a month on my internship. My rent is 500, that leaves me with 250 per month. I do alright. I often cook a big chili/stew/bolognese/whatever on a sunday evening with lots of beans or veg or whatever's going cheap and that normally lasts me until wednesday or thursday. Rice and pasta are cheap so I load up on those. I walk to work instead of taking the metro, only adds about 15 minutes to my journey and is good for the mind and body. Struggling while you're young is character building I think. I could phone home and ask my parents for money but I prefer to live within my means because it makes me feel good aout myself, even if my means are pretty meagre.

>>9708206 So hop the fence. I do it all the time. In fact, fenced in bins are the best, since they protect you from detection. >>9708296 Yes, a few tips. First, make sure you wear thick work gloves. There's broken glass, needles, razor blades, all kinds of nasty stuff in the trash. Odds are good you'll never encounter any of that, but better safe than sorry. Plus, in cold weather, the metal bins are painful to touch. For the same reason, you should be wearing thick-soled boots, preferably with steel shanks. No sneakers, no sandals. And yes, I'm occasionally harassed, but I usually go out at 3-4am after the restaurants have closed and the workers gone home and there's little traffic on the street. Mostly the cops leave me alone. Sometimes they'll stop to see what I'm up to, but I'll give them a wave and smile, and usually they'll move on. On the few occasions I've been warned or threatened, I just move on. Lots of fish in the sea and lots of garbage on the streets. Sometimes I'll grab other things in the trash if I see them, but I'm mostly out for food. I try to keep my life simple; everything I own but my computer will fit in a backpack, so I don't want to accumulate stuff. I found a working HTC smartphone in the trash, once, and I gave it away on Freecycle since I don't use cellphones. If you're looking specifically for food, I can give you one big tip: search for the heavy, dense bags. Bags which feel light and compress easily behind restaurants are wrappers and cups. The bag you want is the really heavy one which feels like it has bowling balls in it. Food is heavy. If it's a really big bag and I can feel it's got lots of hot food in it, I won't bother to sort it there. I'll take the whole bag and sort it at home. For the same reason, you'll want to bring lots of plastic bags and a backpack or hockey bag carry your finds home.

Somewhat related: 2 weeks ago I put a $20 note in a change machine at my college which dispenses one dollar coins, which I like to have handy. Only one came out before I heard the machine jam and out-of-order light turn on. I went on the website of the company who own the machine and they had a refund form. Been 2 weeks now though, maybe time for a phone call or visit soon. Doesn't help my case though that it occured on veterans day when campus was closed, but I was passing by and used an outdoor machine, and didn't have a camera phone with me to take a picture. Does help my case that I went on campus a few days later and all the change machines were broken.

>>9708264 Subway is really bad with that. If someone messes up the sandwich, or the customer forgot their wallet or something, the sandwich has to be thrown away. It's insane the amount of wrapped and bagged sandwiches are thrown out at subway each day.
