Hey Eurofags of /r9k/- Do you hate Americans? Do you really think we're all morbidly obese, ultranationalist, loud and obnoxious bullies who walk around in cargo shorts and hawaiian shirts?

Yes, because you're all exactly like that. In fact, one time I was on a bus and its tires popped because two American tourists got on it.

7 min later 8698037 Anonymous
No. There are some stereotypical loud, ignorant americans who have no knowledge about the history and culture outside of america and that's the kind of americans people look down on. But most americans are pretty cool. But still really loud.

>>8698108 As a Swede who's moving to america I've spent some time in Texas, americans are in general very keen on both being polite and hierarchy. So most of the time when you meet strangers you call them sir to be polite, and in general it's the norm to chat a lot with strangers you've just met. And in the job americans are really bitchy about rank and who has the most power and especially traditional fellows will insist that you call them sir or use their title. I've grown up addressing my teachers and bosses with their first name or even nicknames but that shit won't fly in the US so it's been a very strange transition to me.

Well, no. I go to the US yearly since I have family living in Staten Island, New York. The people I met while I was there were really open and nice. Hell, even more open than where I am from. However, whenever we have american tourists over they're incredibly obnoxious. To the point where groups of american tourists approach me in Amsterdam and ask for the nearest coffee shop to get stoned or where to fuck the hottest whores. I stopped by Mcdonalds the other day for a quick bite, and there were some british tourists in front of me. It was a group of three, and it was rather strange because they all ordered as a group. SouthAmericanfag living in Yurop here. I'd say that compared to Murricans and SA, Yuropean people, at least in parts of France and The Netherlands, seem somewhat autistic and they all talk in the lowest volume possible. They also seem afraid of social interactions, like, if I'm sitting on the bus and I put my feet on the seat in front of me, no on will tell you shit even if the bus is crowded, and if I started singing loud or talking loud or hitting the windows, they'll all just look at me, perhaps scared. In Peru, they'd have already thrown you out of the moving bus, like I've actually seen that shit, one guy knocks you the fuck out for being rude and everyone just cheers and laughs, lol. Oh and yeah, I've been called loud and "intrusive", mainly by the qt, every time I talk to my family or friends she thinks I'm angry but it's not my fault ya'll talk in a retardedly low volume, and also I just said hi or good morning to the old ladies in the street (because that's the polite thing to do) but apparently that's me being rude, lol.

>>8698183 Dutchman here. What you perceive as mean is just matter of factly for us. What you see as being nice is suspiciously servile to us. I can't find the video, but I recently saw an interview with American historian commenting on this. Our rude reputation started mostly with wealthy people travelling to the Netherlands (since they were the only ones who could afford to do so). Anglo culture was and perhaps is a lot more class based and those rich people were used to people of lesser standing getting out of the way for them on the sidewalk, calling them sir and treating them with a certain decorum and such and instead found themselves being bumped into by people, cursed at and treated quite indifferently by inn and shop keepers. Our brand of egalitarianism is of the "and who the fuck are you?" variety. It's not necessarily hostile, but it treats people as equally unimportant until they give reason to do otherwise. It's more pragmatism than malevolence though. Instead of treating everyone as esteemed, we tend to treat everyone as commoners. Softening things up and sugar coating just gets in the way, we got spices to ship and canals to dig and shit.

I'm British and I certainly don't hate all Americans, but I do think there's a surprising amount of cultural difference between us. First of all there's obviously a huge difference between the cultures of different states so I am talking in general terms. The politeness thing is a big one. The American brand of friendliness and politeness tends to come across as very artificial and insincere to most of us, so we in turn come across cold and often rude to Americans. This is also probably a rural urban thing as well, as people who complain about nobody talking to them on the tube seem to all come from tiny towns in the middle of nowhere where you don't worry about nutjobs because everybody makes the local crazy man where a special hat. The stereotype about loudness is also true in my experience, as Americans really do seem to bellow at eachother across the table and laugh fucking loudly, no concept of indoor voices at all. This is probably confirmation bias though, as I'm not gonna notice Americans being quiet. The most annoying thing about americans is probably their idea of how fucking great the USA is. A lot of Americans I've met just love the endless dick waving about military size, GDP etc and it's fucking boring. There seems to be a mentality that because you were born in the biggest and 'greatest' country, americans are by extension a greater people. Americans are the first to complain in another country about not having home comforts.

3 hours later 8699560 Anonymous
>>8699557 In my experience America is also a nation of extremes, especially of opinion. In terms of physical things, wealth is a big one. You have the richest people in the world with possibly the best quality of life, but you also have crushing, abject poverty that is worse than most developed countries. You have the best healthcare in the developed world if you can afford it, the worst if you cannot. Opinion is always extreme, you will rarely meet an American who is undecided on a topic, they will most likely already have an incredibly strong opinion and are extraordinarily resistant to changing their mind. Politics is black and white, morality is black and white. As a brit that is weird because we are in general a nation of cynicism and apathy. We tend to not get quite as fervently opinionated about things than Americans. Overall I find 'America hate' distasteful, it is reasonably common amongst people in the UK, mostly coming from people eating up shitty stand up comedians, and bad experiences with ignorant tourists. I think it's stupid, In my opinion you're all fine, just fucking weird sometimes.

I don't hate Americans but I strongly mislike the American mentality (which obviously not all Americans posess and not all to the same dagree). I think with all this talk of the "western" world people often forget how different America and Europe are. Americans especially tend to forget this because your average American doesn't know shit about Europe while Europeans tend to have a general idea of America (which makes sense since the internet and the movie marked are American dominated, so Europeans get more to see of the American culture than vis versa). Which also probably is what annoys me most about America. They disregard anything that's not American which would be retarded in any situation but which is especially retarded since their country is so fucked up and they could use some new perspective. The stereotype that all Americans are dumb isn't true, they aren't any dumber or smarter than other people. But they definitely have a different kind of education and a different outlook on the world. (It's also part of the reason this board is so shit and you can hardly have a normal discussion. All the broscience is mainly an American problem because you believe the whole world works like America.)

There's no necessity for an American to learn a foreign language, especially a European one. Knowing two or three languauges is imperative in Europe because of the different nationalities that interact on a regular basis. You guys are the Yuro Zone, we are Murrica. Canadians speak the same language, for the most part and it's just not needed. Learning for fun is a nice novelty but Americans are too busy working 60 weeks to bother with that. >>8699698 >My impression is that since you can be fired in many places just because the boss just doesn't like the look of you Nation of extremes again. In the private sector, most people are what's called "at-will" employees. Legally, this means that no contract exists between the employer and the employee. So I can quit at any time for any reason, and they can fire me at any time, for almost any reason. If they straight up fire you because you're black or a woman or something like that, they'll get in trouble, but if it can even vaguely be related to underperformance in your duties, yep, you're out the door. Also, Americans often tend to really define themselves by what they do for a living, so that would encourage a lot of time on the job too. They like to see themselves as essential to what goes on at their company. The other side is public employees. Some of them have unions that are just as (over)mighty as some European ones, and can't be fired for anything short of a murder conviction. They tend to get early retirement and hefty defined-benefit pensions, too. This is a reason big-city schools tend to be so bad. I had a friend who went to Chicago public schools, the teacher would hand out a worksheet and then take a nap. The school wasn't going to fire him because it would take years, and the union would fight his dismissal every step of the way.

Most countries in the world couldn't imperialize for shit, and they all that nonsense garbage in their language. Then you got to stuff like Greek or Roman, some of the first major imperialist nations, and they were some of the first to organize their languages better. Even today Italian is more understandable to dyslexics. Why? Because phonetically it's not that complicated. English speakers start dominating shit, as do the Germans/Dutch, and I know english personally, and I've heard German is more convenient because of their rampant noun-noun conjugation ease, and the fact that most of their spoken words are spelled like they sound, that there aren't as many gotchas or special things like other languages. I believe the German fluidity in their language is what made it so easy for Germans to unify and become effective in their wars. You listen to Hitler speak and it doesn't sound like a complex mish-mash of sounds, but almost English-like in the way his sentences were structured. I tried looking into Russian, but their language has shit like if three o's show up you pronounce each one differently, and the whole 5 letters turn into 5 other letters and vice versa shit if some part of speech is used. Chinese is unique in that you have to be both tone-deaf and dyslexic to not get it. Unsurprisingly, shittons of Chinese can go about their daily business feeling culturally unified.

French isn't much harder than English and the French actually were pretty successful at imperialism. As were the Russians. >I believe the German fluidity in their language is what made it so easy for Germans to unify and become effective in their wars. Only Germany was pretty much the last European country to unify and struggled a long time till that happened and it wasn't effective in it's war either. The only war Germany ever won was 1871.

They aren't genetically different. But goddamn, do you people ever listen to the bullshit that comes out of your mothes? Do you ever look at anything that happens outside of your country. There are honestly Americans who think their's is the freest and most democratic country. Several times on this side I saw people being surprised that there were more monarchies in Europe than just the UK. And in this very thread people call you out for knowing shit about languages, history or culture and instead of aknowledging that or - even better - educating yourself you try to justify it and to explain why you don't need education because America is so great. I honestly never met a people more ignorant and self absorbed as Americans. And the whole world laughs about it. Only you don't care because the whole world means shit to you. If you knew something about history you'd at least understand why you are the way you are. But even that would mean aknowledging that other ways are possible.

I've only met american soldiers that were stationed here (Croatia) during the war in the early 90s. I don't really like the current american foreign policy but from my experience as kid with those soldiers i have to say i really respect them. For example those WBC nutjobs protesting army funerals literally make me want to jump out from my skin in rage. The US troops were super bro tier with us kids, I still think of a typical american as a tall dude in a uniform with a wide smile and laughlines round his eyes just shooting the shit with us on a basketball court. Also playing basketball with the black soldiers was like a dream come true for us, as we were completely obsessed with the NBA as kids. So in my head personally, first thing i do is associate americans as those soldiers, just fond childhood memories, but then I remember that all of americans dont deserve such a nice stereotype in my head. The american tourists i met in more recent years are nice enough and quite inquisitive, but a bit self obsessed and louuud.

Most countries these days hate the fuck out of eachother. When a country produces tons of shit, has competing ideas and people, when most of them can communicate, it's harder to get them going in the same direction when the world isn't known scientifically or reasonably. Most other countries had such powerful or arrogant rulers they just crushed everyone who didn't speak the right way, and French is the arrogant kind. >what is French to hard for you pleb you'll never get anywhere with that attitude? And it wasn't the French who were the opposition in World War II. Nobody ever talks about the great French plays except what, Les Miserables or something? You guys at least got some freedom-fuckers going during the revolutions. Meanwhile in Germany you had philosophers, doctors, musicians, engineers, etc. You look at the actual kinds of people who fought in WWII, and what do you get? I never got around American politics. I mean everbody seems to basically have the same opinion, no matter if they are supposed to be liberals or conservatives. They just differ on small details. Yet the supposed conservatives apprently like calling everything they disagree with socialist even though it doesn't have anything to do with socialism. Real political diversity doesn't seem to exist. Or it least it doesn't seem to have any influence thanks to the two party-system. Those out of the loop are considered threatening to the establishment. There is a lot of diverse opinion among the people but the politicians are all basically left of center these days. Just 20 years ago, it wasn't like this but today a Republican and a Democrat are almost identical in ideology with a slight difference in implementation. Most candidates today are to spendthrift and culturally liberal for my tastes. The citizens are very ignorant of the laws and role of government, so they can easily be swayed by a good speech or campaign stop. Also, don't be an idiot, not even the most retarded "liberals" want to change things for change's sake. For progresse's sake, yeah, and I don't see anything wrong with that per se (though of course there is bad progress), it's better than wanting to preserve things for the sake of preserving them... because, you know, the world changes, wether you want it or not, even if society wouldn#t change, outside factors do and we have to adapt to that. Actually, over a third of Defense spending is on pensions and healthcare for veterans and retired military personnel. Basically, most of our taxes get wasted on the old, and not much is left over for infrastructure or the next generation. Money that is spent on education tends to be wasted, thanks to teacher's unions fighting things like charter schools, and anything that smacks of "if you teach poorly, you might lose your job", they just want endless tax rises to pay for endless pensions for them. I saw it firsthand in Chicago when the teacher's union went on strike a year ago. I wouldn't mind paying my taxes if they bought me anything worthwhile.

>>8705305 >If you are born poor you stay poor unless there's free education i mean damn. While this isn't neciasarly always true, you have it wrong on the free education thing. Poor students are given enough financial aid in most cases to attend a junior/community college or take classes online for free. I did(dropped out though) and my sister is doing so and our family is under the poverty line. Sure you can't go to a four year university for free, but you can get a good education if you want it. People crying about tuition costs and student loans are those that overextended themselves in private loans and have graduated with shit degrees and can't get a good job.

>>8705542 We have this conversation here every fucking day. Give it a rest nigger. No one wants it to change except non-Americans. I you asked servers if they wanted a flat minimum wage position, I'd say 99% of them would say no. They make more on tips than they would at 7.25 or 8.00 an hour. And no, the minimum wage doesn't need to be a 'living wage'. Not all jobs are equal. The guy working fries at McDonald's shouldn't be paid the same as the Nurse in a hospital. I find the idea of 'income equality' disgustingly communistic.
