I've decided I'm going to start playing Magic/Magic: the gathering are the same or different, Idk trading card game, so what things do I need to buy to get started, in another thread someone mentioned about colours and there different play styles. I might go to my local /tg/ store tomorrow so I want to know what to get.

That is a seriously expensive hobby. You need to be damn sure. I'd say don't do it. Not worth the price.

>>8003972 On the contrary it does not have to be. First of hop on on /tg/ and r/mtg. Both are valuable resources of new comer information and to get the lingo and the game somewhat down. Download cockatrice. Get familiar with magic.info/gatherer Avoid wotc own sites if you want to be happy. Are you on irc?

>>8003972 how much money are we looking out, I have a solid amount to get into it, as long as it's cheaper then Warhammer 40k then I'll be happy.

>>8003938 >Magic: the gathering Regarding it, an anecdote unrelated to the OP. I had a number of cards as a teenager; hardly played nor truly collected even, though. Soon, they fell into complete disuse. Nonetheless, a couple of years later, in 2011 maybe, I met a friend who also had some and we played a couple of games. I believe I lost most, through lack of skill, but also because of, I believe, a visible inflation of creatures' power. Our respective editions differed by 4 or so (mine was sixth and seventh, I think); and so did the powers of our typical creatures. One cannot help thinking what the cause of such inflation was. It made me disappointed. I sold my cards after that (although for purely financial reasons).

>>8004009 check out craigslist. a buddy of mine wanted to get in m:tg, so she hopped on craigslist and bought a cartload for fairly cheap. from there she experimented with different decks, picked up booster packs etc.

>>8004009 How serious or competitive are you aiming to be? Casual goes from nothing to anything naturally. Most formats have entry fees and standard needs you to be able to shift cards to and from your binder. Lots of casual formats ranging from almost free to investments. Never buy boosters, always buy singles, get on magiccardmarket, dont buy from LGS, buy str8 from people. Get to know the playgroups and people around your area. where do you live?

>>8004034 I wouldn't be too competitive, most probably just play some games with the guys at the game store or if I find some friends to play with.

>>8004026 This. Buy a bulk of cards after making sure you are not getting ripped. And then wonder how the fuck you are gonna work with your brand new hundreds of cards. 95% of the cards cost less than an euro. And like a 1% of the cards are more than 5e a pop.

>>8004034 also, I live in Wales UK so there aren't many places around here.

>>8004012 There are some broken shit from the early years. Nowdays it's much more tested and made to fit. Although the general level of cards have gone up a bit. In general decks are easier to make look good than they were before due creatures getting better.

>>8004034 So you have access to Magiccardmarket. That's great, it should be your main source of cards after the initial buying of a cards. If you choose to make one. MtG is all about people and the local game. So if you want to enjoy the fuck out of game you need find some classy people. Which in this hobby can be a bit hard. I'd try r/magicTCG/ to find something near you. Do you know anything about the game yet? OH a big thing. Get the DOTP13 on steam. It will definitely make the game a ton easier for you. It is especially made for people looking to get into mtg.

>playing Magic: The Gathering I remember when I was a kid, a friend of mine wasn't allowed to have Yu-Gi-Oh cards (apparently, his mother thought they were Satanic or some dumb shit like that), so he played Magic The Gathering instead. Nowadays, apparently nerdy hipster faggots play it too. Real men play Yu-Gi-Oh. >pic related, my favorite fucking card >I remember freaking the fuck out when I got one of these in a booster pack

>>8004113 cheers, I'll check everything out, and no I don't know too much, I just wanted to get into a hobby but didn't want to get back into Warhammer 40k because it's too expensive.

>>8004134 I can't imagine hipsters playing any trading card game at all.

>>8004152 If I didn't know better, I'd guess they'd play with a regular deck of playing cards branded as being made in Portland or some shit like that. But no, they play Magic: The Gathering. I've seen them talk about it in person and even moreso on Facebook.

>>8004136 fukken GW these days. I pretty much just post on /tg/ and lurk here. I dont mind actually being of use since Im here only mourning the separation of /adv/ and seeing this board left with everything that was bad about it. Here's a few indepth sites that you might want to check out once you get a bit more familiar and decide to stay and invest time and thought. http://www.channelfireball.com/all- strategy/ http://magic.tcgplayer.com/?partner =WWWTCG http://www.starcitygames.com/ +twitch channels of various events and communities. The game has grown fuckhuge last 3 years. We are now growing hugely and for now still growing I personally think we will soon see the top amount of active players ever. You are not alone being new!

>>8004215 wow. well, you learn something new everyday I suppose.

>>8004229 Great example of this kind of shift is that mana leak/counterspell/lightning bolt are all seen too good for modern era magic whereas creatures for mere 2 mana can go all the way to 3/3 and have an immediate effect on the game state, like this: http://magiccards.info/m14/en/182.h tml http://magiccards.info/m13/en/193.h tml http://magiccards.info/m14/en/101.h tml

look for a gaming club and see if anyone plays a Living Card Game. The difference between a living card game and a trading card game is everyone has access to all the cards in a living card game. every expansion has to the starter set has the same cards so it focuses more on tactics and deckbuilding.

29 min later 8004330 hh-a
>>8004305 Netrunner has been making waves recently and it is fun as fuck to play too. Still the sheer vastness and complexity of MtG fascinates me at least. Nevermind the whole competitive scene.
