Hey /r9k/,
I think that most people on this board are pretty risk-averse. I get the feeling that the majority of people here would not jump into a pool of water without checking the depth first, wouldn't buy a one way ticket to another country unless they had a thorough plan of what to do when they got there, wouldn't randomly approach a girl they liked in the hope that she liked them etc etc.
So what is it that makes people risk avoidant? I think that rich people and people who have serious goals in their career or some other persuit take fewer risks to their physical health. But these people aren't necessarily happy or satisfied, their lives shouldn't be worth any more to them than anyone else.
So... What is it? Fear? Intelligence? Previous bad experience? What would it take to make you do something crazy?

I don't think it's fair to compare those things.
>would not jump into a pool of water without checking the depth first
And risk cracking my skull on the bottom? No thank you, I'll just glance at the numbers on the sides of the pool before I jump, thanks.
>wouldn't buy a one way ticket to another country unless they had a thorough plan of what to do when they got there
Does anyone do this? It seems like asking for some kind of mishap.
>wouldn't randomly approach a girl they liked in the hope that she liked them etc etc.
But that's easy and I do it all the time. There's no risk there, unlike the other two things you listed.

If you do anything other than approaching the girl out of that list you are retarded.
To answer your question, I found through experience that not taking risks is much better. The only reason to take them is that you are not happy with your current situation. If you learn to be happy about what you have and what you can reasonably achieve, you'll live a much better life.

Not OP, but there is a risk of rejection, etc. Risk-averse people have a hard time getting passed this.
Buying a one way ticket to another country may sound like a mishap to you, but to some people it's a fucking adventure. If you can understand that, you can understand the part about approaching people.

I meant like cliff diving or something, guess that wasn't clear.. Of course there are lots of different tpyes of risks, some are easy for some people and others are hard. But in general some people are very reluctant to take a chance that could result in even a minor negative consequence, and some people just don't give very many fucks.
