Maybe ponies aren't that good at going offensive, so they focus on a defensive stand instead. Like, those spears aren't used for offensive attacks, ponies use them when standing firm on their ground, so anyone stupid enough to charge right at them will be met by spears. The ones that doesn't charge them are met with a barrage of magic from the unicorns standing behind the ponies with spears.
