good evening, I am writing a 10 page essay on how adult males who like MLP do demonstrate masculinity. I have some points down although I feel like there are more that I may have missed. What other masculine qualities do you guys contain? I hope I don't sound offensive. It has to be a counter argument essay about how "girly" it is for men to be interested in things that are socially constructed as feeminine. I am trying to explain that just because a man is into such things, does not mean he should be socially emasculated and they actually do contain masculine traits. Thank you for the help!

Essays with a forgone conclusion are a waste of time.
Please see http://www.paulgraham.com/essay.htm l
If you are on the other hand just doing this for school grades, stick to the standard format. Get a bunch of quotes and citations from other people and don't do any actual thinking or original research yourself.

You first have to define Masculinity. Also consider it will be a different answer for everyone. To me it means you do what you want and if anyone thinks otherwise can kiss my ass.

The problem is that we are, by definition, the opposite of masculine. Bronyism has always had an air of counter-culture.

This is going to be your main problem. Masculinity is objective.

That is true. Have defined Masculinity as independence, confidence, etc.

That's going to be tough to gauge. Everything you know about bronies is based on posts on the internet (anonymous or mostly anonymous) or from conventions/meetups (which attract a certain type of people and are far different from usual social situations).

Counter-culture, so like punks and goths? They, ttoo are counter-cultuers. They have been judged by having long hair, or tight jeans, or wearing make-up, etc. Yet they demonstrate masculinity by being independent and rebellious, even tough. Am sure there are several things that are masculine about men who enjoy MLP.Just don't know more reasons.

Are you a brony yourself?
15 min later 9018512 Anonymous
You mean as a whole, or do you want specific examples?
As a whole, I can only think of one - the same reason a guy would wear a pink shirt, gaudy shoes, and act provactively at a bar - to get into a fight.

I think there's a certain level of maturity in accept that you like something that goes against social norms and embracing it.

I think OP should write his own fucking paper

At the risk of derailing OP's thread, this is a brony board. It will always be a brony board. You can delude yourself into thinking otherwise all you want.
25 min later 9018645 Anonymous
>>9018623
That isn't even what the creator of this board called it or made it for.

OP's just looking for information. If you think we're writing the paper for him you're sadly mistaken.

Moot made the board so that all pony threads would be contained in the same place. The people who started and continue to make pony threads are bronies. This is not a difficult concept.
30 min later 9018709 Anonymous
>>9018671
But that's wrong. "Brony" is something that took off elsewhere. Moot has always just called posters who started and continue to make pony threads on 4chan "ponies".

If you ask me, a large part of being comfortable watching this show is getting over the socially constructed bullshit that is masculinity and femininity. What I'm trying to say is I'd never try to defend this show as masculine because I really don't give a fuck what's manly and what's not.

Brony as a term originated on /co/. You can't retroactively change a definition that's existed for two years.

existence != widespread useage
Read what you've got there. It was pretty much shrugged off as a bad joke.
The part you can't see is where someone like you also read that thread and the term piggybacked it's way off to another part of the internet where it was taken seriously and spread.

not giving a fuck, pretty manly

It's still a widespread, commonly accepted term for anyone outside of the target demographic that watches My Little Pony and engages in the community. Only recently have people gotten so anal about it.
