what is the best book relating to american indians?

probably one that doesn't include the word indians

>>4513364 This. I grew up in the Black Hills of South Dakota, an area with a large native population, and every Indian I ever knew always refereed to themselves and their people by their specific tribal name or as Indians. It's not a derogatory term you stuffy bleeding-heart twats.

>>4513318 Thirteen Moons is pretty good. It's historical fiction, but it touches on the trail of tears and the main character spends a lot of time hanging out with Indians. Word of advice: stay away from Sherman Alexie. He's just a racist bigot playing the victim card like it expires tomorrow. His stories are clunky, melodramatic bullcrap meant to inspire white guilt written with the emotional maturity of a Harry Potter book.

I actually enjoyed the book in the link but they're nothing more than the type of folklore stories you'd read about in most other cultures tbh. http://www.amazon.com/AMERICAN-LEGE NDS-Pantheon-Folklore-Library/dp/03 94740181/ref=pd_bxgy_b_img_y

>>4513400 That's not issue. Indian refers to people from India. It's literally some linguistic fuck up passed on for centuries and treated as factually correct.

People who want to impress everyone with how progressive they are will fucking jump at the opportunity to correct anyone for using the term Indian, which they imagine to be a hurtful label. Objecting to the term Indian is almost as asinine as objecting to the term black when referring to Africans. "Hurr they're not literally black so that's racist."

>>4513383 (not the other anon, but...) I don't know any dedicated books on the subject off the top of my head, but Eric Wolff's Europe and the People Without History has some really interesting sections on the American Indians. He also provides extensive end notes to each chapter that contains a ton of recommended reading.

People's History of America goes out of its way to cover a lot of events from the eyes of the people on the bad end of history, rather than the conquerors, so it has a lot on how Natives lived and worked and dealt with European immigration. Chapter 1 opens with excerpts from Columbus' journal where he remarks at how attractive and generous and kind the Natives were, and then in the very same paragraph, how easy it will be to exploit and enslave them. Also: >>4513364 >>4513400 I'm a registered, card-carrying Chickamauga Cherokee on one side of my family, and Creek on the other. "Indian" is only so common a term because it's what was handed to us by white folk. I don't get upset over the term, and neither does any Native I know, but it is more correct to refer to us as Native Americans, or Natives, with the American part being implicit. Just for clarity's sake. It's not like "Nigger" or "Negro" is justified because that's what early Whites and to this day many Black people call African people.

Empire of the summer moon. Has the be the hands down best book on american indians. >last tribe america was at war with >never signed a treaty >book focuses on this tribe >richest in terms of horse flesh >some chiefs had thousands upon thousands of horses >america had to send civil war generals and automatic weaponry into the great plains to kill the last of them >

>>4513634 >I was born with water on the brain. Okay, so that's not exactly true. I was actually born with too much cerebral spinal fluid inside my skull. But cerebral spinal fluid is just the doctors' fancy way of saying brain grease. And brain grease works inside the lobes like car grease works inside an engine. It keeps things running smooth and fast. But weirdo me, I was born with too much grease inside my skull, and it got all thick and muddy and disgusting, and it only mucked up the works. My thinking and breathing and living engine slowed down and flooded. If this is "one of the best American writers" I think I'm done reading American literature.

Thomas King's "The Truth about Stories" is like a collection of speeches he gave about Native American storytelling and identity among natives. It's actually some really fascinating stuff. Also, with the Indian vs Native American vs Native vs Indian American debate, it really isn't a big deal. They refer to themselves and others as all of those all the time and it's not seen as derogatory. I have heard there is slight differences in meaning and context, but I've never had them fully explained enough to think it warrants too much fretting over.
