>>9839624 What's your source? Because I'm about a 2 hour plane ride from China, but my city teaches English in all the schools. If your data is averaging out people, then it is flawed. Chinese is only spoken by the most people because it's a huge country. Many more expats are speaking English and spreading it as the global language.

The odds of this country projecting its power and culture in any significant way are slim to none.

Some chink will found a website to discuss western culture in Chinese and makes the mistake of making a board with no specific topic, thus causing his fledgling website to inevitably become filled with chinks who don't really care about western culture. In between sucking dicks and occasionally moderating his website, the chink will watch it grow and grow until it's not about western culture anymore and people have constant ching chong nip nong debates over whether or not the western culture subsections of the site really belong anymore and everyone will be extremely autistic. Eventually, a board to discuss international culture will be founded that has the occasional ununderstood English person in a sea of Chinese characters.

ITT: Op is retarded. English has dominated the globe in a way China never will, for about 400 years, and still only 1 in 5 speak it, tops.

I'm amazed of how many people ignore the power of China, they're already investing a lot of money here i think in less than 10 years half of the economy will be controlled by China. And i don't really like China that much, i hate their language, but it's reality knocking at my door, America is losing their influence in here pretty quickly. Even the Buenos aires standard bank was bought buy ICBC(the bank of China)

50 min later 9840450 Anonymous
>>9840345 In this day and age, being the main player in an economy isn't enough for a language to become a lingua franca, when you haven't gone out and colonised anything. Most Chinese speakers live in China still, and China haven't shown any interest in fart around the world invading countries like the US, UK and France have in the past. English has nothing to worry about, until China, quite literally, gets up off it's yellow arse and actually goes somewhere.

57 min later 9840605 Anonymous
>>9840450 >Most Chinese speakers live in China still And most englsh speakers live in english countries still. What's your point?. I'm saying that in international contexts, Chinese will have more importance than english as time goes by. China is invading countries economically, and even moving their people to this countries, in my neighborhood(that is pretty small and unknown) there are at least 10 chinese cornershops with entire families working on them in less than 20 blocks.

1 hours later 9840782 Anonymous
>>9840605 >What's your point? My point is, that firstly those English-speaking countries are spread out over no less than 5 continents (6 if you include South America, but Guyana is too irrelevant). Secondly, under colonial rule many were forced to learn English or face persecution of some sort - something China are not in a position to instigate. It's not how it was, with the invaders forcing their language upon the natives. This time, with this Chinese economic invasion, it is the other way around. The Chinese are adopting the language of the native. This is an invasion of coercion (selling), not one of force. You wouldn't expect the buyer to learn a language just to use a shop, the shop workers learn the language to accommodate the buyer.

>>9840782 But people are not speaking english because of XIX imperialism, people are speaking english because the educational institutions which are influenced by the labour market demand people to speak english. If China dominates the labour market, educational institutions will teach chinese. Universities in here even teach portuguese and french.

1 hours later 9840949 Anonymous
Its useless that we still learn english coz everyone will speak chinese in the future ROFL

1 hours later 9840959 Anonymous
>>9840911 And as I said, the labour market, including the Chinese themselves, will be learning English (or whichever other local language is relevant). Therefore, most people - except those who want to work in China itself - will have no need to learn the language.

>>9841100 In Australia anyway. It's the new government initiative - it was on the news in the UK recently. Don't you follow your own news? Rest of the world will continue with English as the Romance/Germanic jump to English is not as far. Aussies are just trying to lick China's arse due to their geographical position.

>>9841148 This. There will be an explosion in Mandarin speakers, but only on a similar scale to that of Japanese in the 80s and 90s. In relation to languages like English, Spanish and even French, nothing will change. Why? Because so many Chinese are already learning those languages, that we wont need to.

China can't become the economic front runner if they keep regarding stealing as an ok thing. Also, Chinese is not going to overtake English as a lingua Franca, you think Chinese-African relations are being done in Chinese?

As a Chinese speaker, I don't think so that Chinese will completely take over the role English plays today, because Chinese is much more difficult than English to learn. And personally I don't wish Western people, especially Americans learn Chinese so that my competitors won't know me better than I know them. That does make me feel good that most Western people can't really figure us out but we know what they think about us.
