German student in the US here. I have encountered many clappings since last fall when I arrived here. >arrive safely in airplane in the US >American expats applaud >some chick in my class has birthday - teacher mentions it at the beginning of class >class applauds >go to movie theatre with American chick - movie ends (happy end) >audience applauds >watch the superbowl, the ram trucks "farmer" commercial is on >buddies applaud >end of semester, the teacher wishes us a great christmas break >class applauds >be invited to join a Honors society, I receive the invitation >messenger applauds me And no, I'm not mad or anything.

>>9828402 It doesn't happen all the time. 4chan makes it seem like every movie. The general purpose is for people to imply show pleasure toward the movie. From what I have seen from being on /pol/ I think it really is a matter of we want everyone else to know our opinion and to discuss it if we disagree.

The first I remembered was Starship Troopers, as it was so ridiculously YEEHAW and cheesy that you couldn't help but show embarrassed approval. We do clap at high school sports, graduations, good news received when there are more than 4 people within hearing distance, etc. You would be a fool not to admit this, even if you're a great lakes midwesterner.
