Why is WWII still so imprinted in our minds today while WWI is totally forgotten and Cold War (which should be more "important" today) is on the path of being forgotten as well? What gave Nazi Germany so much strenght to be somehow "relevant" today?

Something to do with the fact that it was the most destructive war to ever take place on this planet in all of history? Is this a serious question?

because WWI was just a minor tiff between 2 cousins, whereas WW2 was like a movie. The Nazis were like villains out of James Bond or something. Cool outfits, bizarre rituals with salutes, and all that shit.

I think it may be partly because of the USA. In WWI, they weren't too important. In WWII, they really turned the war around, fought against the Japs, did some great things but also lost a lot (relatively), and tasted the bitter feeling of a war trauma for the first time. In the cold war, nothing really happened. No big commie massacre. No nukes. Only a few proxy wars and stuff, and in many of those the USA wasn't really "glorious", but rather just as evil and dirty as the soviets. And as we all know, nations tend to talk about their glorious times more often than about the bad stuff that happened. Since most people today and in the last decades watched mostly US movies, read US literature and consume US culture every day, this view of the three wars has spread all around the world. Of course, this is only one factor that may have had influence in this matter.

>>8807159 The problem is people trying to liken the "Cold War" as some sort of "war" in the strictest sense of the word (and not in it's original, literal sense). The Cold War was a time of heightened political and military tensions, while the "main course" was (thankfully) "not served", there were plenty of "appetizers" (and countless "disappeared" Average Joes, as usual).

>>8807246 Well, for me it was kind of pathetic, generals ordering "human wave" to get soldiers killed by thousands. Still giving chalvary charges to barbed wires and machine guns. The "heoric disembark in Gallipoli" that was a bunch of britanics getting killed by nothing. Tanks that had to wait for the calvary to push down. Yes, you have the heroes, the Red Baron and such, but if there is "a bad guy" there are the goverments and generals of all the nations. For ww2 is easier, nazis=bad rest of the world=good, we win, Yay!

Because it is a war that is easy to define a bad guy and have us as good guys. It has all the elements of the perfect story. WWI we simply did not do enough. WWII also eclipsed it in terms of scale and story telling potential. With Korea it ended in a cease fire and we're still dealing with them today. Vietnam showed us what war truly was like and made us question wtf we were doing. The cold war as a whole was simply parnoia and fear. Gulf war was a one sided ass kicking and felt like policing more than anything. WoT and beyond is seen as Americans fucking everything up on lies.

>>8806393 Several reasons. 1: USA, French, English and Russian propaganda. All of them flood the mass culture with bullshit about them being knights on white horses who saved the world. Even in present days - see "Enigma" movie. Good americans get enigma and save the world. Not a word that it was Polish mathematicians that broke the code. Or how some retarded uk right winged party used division 303 to show how the british themselves won battle of Britain. 2: Edgy dumbfucks 14-17 year olds who think nazis were cool guys because they were wearing hugo boss uniforms and killed lots of people. They still believe german propaganda, and negate any sort of historical facts that portrait germans as monsters (concentration camps? never happened!). 3: The nature of nazism It's not portrayed as "evil", it is evil. Killing innocent people, women and children, stealing, burning books, murdering scholars and scientists, lying, classifying people on superhumans and animals... et cetera. 4: We still feel the impact of WW2 today. Most of /int/ retards tell poles that "it was XX years ago, time to forget it". But the effects of the war and it's outcome are felt today. It will take a hell lot of time to get to the level of western world for us, as we not only didn't get money through Marshall plan, but also our resources and good were drained by Russia. 5: WW2 and all it's atrocities happened when we though our civilization and humanity were on it's peak. It showed us that humans can commit horrible crimes and justify them just because one madman tells it's ok.

rightists say Nazis are an essential example of leftism, leftists say Nazis are an essential example of rightism truth is it's a little of both. social democracy is closest materially and nationalism is closest ideologically.

>>8816929 >WW2 is pretty much the only relevant war in which the US played a somewhat big role. We may not have been militarily important in WW1 but our supplies and loans were VERY important. You're also ignoring the Cold War and all the conflicts that took place within it. People like WWII because it is definite. The Nazis were evil. Anglo-American alliance was good. It sarted in 1939, ended in 1945. WWI was much more complicated, and in reality, so was WW2, but it's easier to simplify. Add to this the 100 million people who fought in WW2, and it leaves a larger crater on human culture.

I think it's just that WW2 is the only even remotely recent war you can write a clean, heroic narrative in. You have good guys, you have bad guys, they fight, and there is a definitive happy ending. Any other war, and you're mired in the senseless waste of life and the feeling that you're throwing your life away for nothing. But with WW2 and the Axis, you basically have an evil that HAS to be stopped.

13 hours later 8817852 Anonymous
>>8817501 Thing is, WW1 is not even remotely forgotten in Europe. It's very much in everyone's memories, but it's a strictly "it was a terrible thing and it should never have happened" event. Nobody is PROUD of having fought in WW1, unless they're simply proud that they did their best in a terrible, horrible situation that nobody should never be in.
