It varies. In most houses you take off your shoes, some allow you to wear shoes inside, mostly when they have a stone floor. House shoes(slippers?) are common as well.

the pattern is actually pretty simple, if you have furry or wooden floor or if you have a messy outside ( snow/ lot of rain/mud ecc.) you will most likely take of your shoes. becouse carpets and moquette are a pain in the ass to clean and wood is easily damaged.

The etiquette is to ask the host whether you have to take your shoes off or not, but you go into every home visit expecting to take them off, in which case the host will usually provide slippers in the colder seasons. The only exceptions I regularily encounter is when someone hosts a party where people go in and out all the time and are drunk anyway, in which case the host will just remove all rugs beforehand and clean the floor the next day.

In Serbia , it is a very common to take off your shoes when you are visiting someone , especialy in the rural areas, where the paved streets are not that common . Also in the citys you can usualy assert that someone is from peasant/workers class background if they make their guests take off shoes when they enter their home.
