Do you know how to swim?

1 min later 8659821 Anonymous
Only barely. I had to take a swim test to graduate college and I was the slowest person. I'm not even fat just bad at coordination and finesse.

3 min later 8659861 Anonymous
I guess. Not particularly skilled at it but I can manage.

Thinking that someone does not know how to swim always freaks me out somehow. I cannot even remember time when I could not swim, I mean I started swimming in nearby lake before I could even walk well...

Everyone in the Netherlands knows how to swim unless they weren't born here. In that case they have a high risk of drowning.

Yes, but I wasn't a very quick learner. Had to repeat swim school several times

Apparently I was able to float almost naturally. Which is fortunate when you are 1yo and fall in a pool. I never became very good at swimming though, but I like it especially in rivers.

As an Australian, of course I can swim. In fact you aren't technically classified as an adult by the Government unless you can; if you don't pass your swimming test then you can't get a drivers licence, 18+ card, etc etc. This is no problem in practice though as all Australians can swim; those who can't are weeded out by secretive tradition I will now reveal to foreigners for the very first time. All hospitals have an Olympic swimming pool. When an Australian child is born, the placenta is cut, he/she is hosed down and then immediately chucked into the pool. If he/she is able to make the whole 100m to the other side without drowning, then he/she is handed back to the parents and deemed a fit Australian baby. If the baby has defects then it is deemed unAustralian and obviously drowns; it is henceforth thrown with the other unAustralian weaklings off the top of Ayers Rock (or Uluru, in Aboriginal) as is the custom of our people.

Swim school is mandatory, at tenth grade you have to be able to do breaststroke for 20 minutes. Swim 25 metres while rescuing somebody and know at least 3 methods to hold and unconscious person while swimming. The year before you have to be able to swim 50 meters while wearing clothes, take off the clothes while treading water then swim 50 meters again. We don't have many people here and it's stupid to lose somebody to drowning.
