In your country, do the rich and powerful usually serve in the military?

5 min later 8509909 Anonymous
Nope. It's even quite comon for the sons of the rich to "avoid" the "mandatory" military service.

There are, of course, exceptions, but as a rule, no.

In my country, the poor serve in the military in order to not miss out on subsistence salaries, free meals and growing crops in military fields Its literally a backup welfare system

22 min later 8510119 Anonymous
It is mandatory but if you college graduate you serve only 6 months otherwise 15 months. They don't send short term soldiers to dangerous areas so the poor people die. fuck them

22 min later 8510127 Anonymous
Nope, working in the military is for low income duders.

Hell no. They used to do that in Soviet times, like Stalin's son. But we are returned from Soviet nightmare to a normal state of being eternal backward shithole. Hail empire!

If you don't have royalty on the battlefield, you are pretty much a non-country.

The top echelons of our military is dominated by Military families. They usually have Prussian roots.

>>8512882 I'm not entirely sure why you posted Mackay, he was Scottish and his family was Scottish. However, a lot of the German/Prussian families when they moved here prior to World War 1 & 2 changed their German names to English ones, same thing applies to after World War 2, they changed their names ~ usually to Cornish, English, Irish or Scottish surnames. A good example of this is the Monash family. My family also did it, from Schmidt to...Well I'd rather not have /int/ knowing who I am.

We can't even fill our military roles despite them being paid a good wage and having a ton of benefits. We just hire American and Brit soldiers now. feels questionable man

4 hours later 8513227 Anonymous
>>8513175 Rinehart is just English spelling of the German name Reinhardt so that's not really a good example of a family changing their name to hide their ancestral roots for fear of discrimination. I'm not famous...But you could easily track me through the Internet so I'm going to abstain from further discussion on this subject.

>>8513211 We can't fill the Army or the Reserves. The Navy and Air Force is cut throat for positions. It is also cut throat between the various families for the top echelon positions too.

In the US, it's actually pretty common for families to exist that basically breed career officers who serve their entire lives despite having "old money" that they could otherwise just live off, or actively invest. Believe it or not, both of my parents come from families like that, who first met as officers in the military, and later Washington. Their fathers themselves (both of my grandfathers) were themselves officers who came from a long line of "financially independent military men"...on one side, back to the revolutionary war. I'm a fuckup who has no interest in service, tradition, or duty though. Just spending my 20s burning through my trust fund. Sometimes I tell myself that it's better than getting my legs blown off in trashganistan, but I know in my heart that I'm just not good or disciplined enough. Unlike my brother. Valentine's day drunk is a depressing drunk.

4 hours later 8513624 Anonymous

Our king and crown prince are both officers who have served. Our King actually have the highest score achieved in our military academy, but the royal family is pretty much raised from early childhood to be good at such things. I have no idea if the richest kids dodge the mandatory conscription service, but I wouldn't be surprised.

Just to elaborate further on the British Army: Royals serve - Harry as the most obvious example, and the one who is most engaged in frontline action. The British Army/Navy/RAF's officers are made up almost entirely of middle class, well-to-do young men. Many are graduates, and almost all of them are privilaged. Simple fact is that, in officer selection, bias still exists towards the wealthy (mostly because there are aspects of the selection which require an education on current and foreign affairs, history and strong literacy). I think only a very small percentage of officers were not educated in public schools. Enlisted men are all chavs and lads, of course.

It's not politically correct to put war heroes in power here so we elect someone who served a a few months in the military to show "You know he served the country but he didn't overdo it."
