What is your opinion on conscription? Do you have it in your country and if yes, have you gone/will you go to the army? Do you think conscription is a valuable option in national defense or should reserve forces be professional forces instead?

I think it should be mandatory for US citizens to serve for at least 1-2 years since we are so gung-ho about shooty-killy and maybe it would make people think twice before jumping on the warhawk bandwagon when they realize that either themselves or their children will have to go overseas and might get killed.

>>8481295 Also it would improve the quality of soldier we send overseas. Not to insult the current pool of soldiers but I highly doubt they are filled to the brim with degree-holders.

conscription and armed forces altogether are an artifact of the past. finances ruin countries quicker than guns nowadays. year after the birth of christ two-thousand and thirteen, I expect you guys not to join the army

>>8481373 Not going to the army still carries a negative social stigma in Finland, one that can even reach into your possible career choices and employment possibilities.

Conscription seems viable to me in nations that may potentially face a conventional invasion of their sovereign territory from an immediate nature or in a nation that requires inflated military power to maintain it's existence. For example, military conscription would be viable in a nationstate like South Africa, Japan or South Korea but not a nationstate like Germany or Brazil.

I think it should be mandatory as national defence/ensure a pool of trained men are ready to defend the country, but only professional soldiers should be deployed overseas.

>>8481338 I think its good. Forces all those NEET 18-20 year olds to actually do something after highschool and maybe learn a thing or two. This is especially advantageous in more autistic nordic cultures.

If the military was more strict; I would have been taken into mandatory service. I would have complained, kicked and shouted... but I would have finished my mandatory service. Today I would have been a stronger and better man. In hindsight I regret not signing up, marching in the woods, handling guns and learning teamwork. They are valuable skills and I wasted the oppurtunity of a lifetime. Don't be an ass. Join the military.

It's a good thing usually. I skipped it though, because the country is going to shit, and I don't want to help it.

Conscription gives a country a sense of national unity and pride. A useful psychological tool for the populace even in peacetime.

>>8481234 We have "enforced" militar service at age 18, but it's a joke. Medium and High class kids can get away with it paying about $50 usd to someone in the army or navy. I did it but I'm a poor loser patriot, but it wasn't very militar, we marched a little, learn the ranks and the names of the top officers, and the rest was moping floors, cleaning parks, planting trees and painting schools. It's good to force us to do some social service for our country, but nothing less

>>8481542 It absolutely is. The patriotism and purpose which a military service gives imbues the atmosphere of an entire country, and affects even those who did not serve. Women serving would intensify the results, but even without them the effects are felt.

>>8481481 You sure about that? Yugo had a conscript method until the end, didn't help much :\ Anyway, we had conscription until few years back. I signed for service under arms, but it was abolished a year or two later. I regret it, would be good lesson in discipline. Still, by the time it had ended, conscription in Serbia was a joke, only 9 months service (or maybe 6 months, not sure now).

>>8481569 Sorry. In my experience, the only people I've met who oppose sending the military overseas are NDP faggots who usually accompany what they're saying with 'why do we even have a military?' Besides, it's our duty to NATO and freedom to be able to send our men overseas. In the event we're attacked, playing defensive won't win the war.

17 min later 8481614 Anonymous
We have it. I did it for 11 months. I liked it, fun times.

17 min later 8481634 Anonymous
It's not too bad. Personally, I'm going to use it as a springboard and make some use out of it to further my career, as having military work experience in my field of work is typically seen as a good thing. It's nice how they've become stricter with their selection, too. It's gonna be a jolly good time, I'm sure.

>>8481597 For the most part in modern Finland at least, I don't believe this is the case. Most people who I know went to the army only on the chance of serving only 6 months instead of 13 months in civil service. Nothing at all to do with national pride anymore.

>>8481234 Conscription was "suspended" (de facto abolished) in France around fifteen years ago or so, because it was too expensive and useless in modern wars. But I still think we need one. It's not a military thing but a political one. Conscription is a duty of the citizen and also an additionnal factor of unity between countrymen. We were the first to implement it, and it was extremely useful to ensure our contry's unity at a time when most people didn't even speak French. People from all regions, origins, religions, mixed together during conscription and war, had to work together, etc. In these times of religious and "ethnic" divisions, we would benefit a lot from this.

>>8481605 At this point and time the only foreseeable reason we'd need to deploy overseas is for fight'n terrorism and that hasn't work'd out too well in the past decade. The War on Terror is a job for clandestine forces and the intelligence community, not conventional militaries. Until a proper conventional thread arises for NATO to beat up, overseas deployments strike me as an act of burning money that needs to go to modernization of the forces we have now. The proposed mordernizatians of our Navy are a step in the right direction for this as opposed to bombing Syria. With that being said, reactionary fucktards like >>8481576 need to go back to /b/.

If think it is a good idea and people shouldnt complain because they owe the society and community it. You've been provided with free healthcare and school etc. I guess that it only applies to first world countries and not like in Iraq 1991.

1 hours later 8483630 Anonymous
I don't believe in conscription, you shouldn't be forced into military service involuntarily at all. I'm in the military because I want to be.

Conscription is not cost effective.

2 hours later 8484400 Anonymous
>>8483690 This basically. It becomes more of a financial liability in times of extended peace. I can only see relatively few countries capable of maintaining conscription long term even in times of peace - those with relatively small populations and a decent socialist infrastructure.

>>8481234 >What is your opinion on the fact that nordics keep making threads about military? I find it inappropriate coming from them. >Do you think they have any legitimity to do this? Of course not, it's been half a century they haven't fought any war, and something tells me they're not gonna fight one in the near future....

While it's not always fun (learning how to handle explosives, simulated battles are fun and training combined arms tactics are a lot of fun though) it's good, especially for nowadays guys. I remember we had guys who cried since they were not used to be treated like shit and yelled at day and night. It's a nice cup of harden the fuck up. Also for non neutral countries it's an especially good idea. Noone cares about professional soldiers bleeding to death in some far away shithole, but noone wants to see pictures of 18 year old conscripts who could be their sons suffering the same fate, so it might help with peace.

2 hours later 8484666 Anonymous
>>8484400 Also, we basically never fight the kinds of wars where mass conscription is necessary anymore. Western states can be fairly sure that the next conflict that involves them will require a small, highly professional military, probably doing counterinsurgency work. And as we saw in Vietnam, conscripts kind of suck at counterinsurgency work.
