That'd be my one complaint about U of T. By 4th year I got to know my department heads so it wasn't that bad, but it's pretty intimidating in your first year.

Institutions with high reputations usually have very current labs or a faculty that is world renown. A student would learn more being mentored by faculty from Ivy League or equivalent in stature, because these schools attract some of the brightest scientists / mathematicians ever seen in the world. Understand that it would be more beneficial to the student to be mentored under someone like Gerard t'Hooft or Leonard Susskind in theoretical Physics (at their institutions) than it probably would to study under some scientist who did the bare minimum dissertation work at some CC. >Also /sci/ sucks It has its moments.
