I don't like my current job anymore. I think I want to become a farmer instead. But I don't even know how to grow crops. So how do I start?

Find a school that teaches agriculture. It's a pretty laid back and easy going life, especially if all you do is cash crops, in which case you'll only be working four months a year, but you should expect to make a below average income.

Acquire lots of cheap land with suitable water availability for the sorts of crops you would like to grow (not too much water, not too little). Maybe you could start by learning about what are the best growing conditions for different crops that you would like to grow.

There are people who wish to become farmer in Japan. I'd like say that they experienced. People who owns land and farm machinery is manager. But people who rent it is worker. The farm machinery is essential in modern agriculture. Computer also being introduced in recent years. So, they need to study. And they make a great deal of labor without pesticides. (Of course, consumer side are worried about the harm of pesticides.) Young people are less likely to enter into farming. Because it is regulated by the government. Countryside community is exclusive. They will struggle to get married. Japanese agriculture have such problems. Similar problems may be also in other country.

By studying the rules and quotas the Fourth Reich imposed on anyone foolish enough to try. Then you ask for a subsidy and then you make a fuss and block the roads with your produce in case anybody dares to touch that subsidy. And thus you make a living.

>>7974020 >Why is the government regulating farming? A century ago, Japan was poor than now. Food problem was social problem. So, the government took control of agriculture. After that, the system did not change. Because, Politicians are relying on the votes of farmers. And farmers are relying on subsidies. So, It is said that "Japanese agriculture is planning economy". As a result, Japanese industry was successful, but agriculture has failed.

Here's an actual useful reply: 1. Read a few editions of Mother Earth News magazine. 2. Start a few threads in /diy/ 3. Join WWOOF, go volunteer in one of those farms. Warning: Farming is one of the hardest, most intense work you can possibly do. It's also poorly paid and enjoys a low social status.

>>7979823 There is "policy of reducing acreage under cultivation" in Japan. In sum, the government determines the amount of the total domestic production of agricultural (specially rice). This is not an absolute compulsion. However, it is induced by subsidy. As result, still now, farmers cannot freely use own land. So (and also geographically), farmer's land is very small than other agricultural country.

Now, system of agriculture varies from country to country. For example ( I heard that), France is helping young people to become farmers. So, people who wish to become farmer, should look at system of their own country. And I hope their success.
