So what does everyone think about Cuba? Do Cubans really like their current communist party in power? Given the opportunity would they choose another party to rule?

>>7583172 The only thing cubans love is an easygoing, no hard work life, and while Chávez and his friends are ruling in Venezuela, they will secure that kind of life for at least some years.

6 min later 7583261 Anonymous
>>7583205 Makes sense I guess, an easy going, no hard work life sounds nice, but you'd think with the lack of certain freedoms after a while they would have had enough?

7 min later 7583283 Anonymous
>>7583261 The ones who crave for those freedoms are in Miami or another places of the USA. The others are "enjoying" a life of planned economy.

Eh pretty sure they don't like it But Cuba is becoming more capitalist they have allowed people to start certain private enterprises and to build their own houses and even buy and sell property now In time Cuba will become fully capitalist and democratic, it is inevitable

Why don't we have the Cubans chime on? Oh, wait.

>>7583709 Yes, it is. You have to contain your words. There's a cuban blogger named Yoani Sánchez. She's a top blogger (Personally I haven't read a single word from her, but she has a lot of the limelight here in latin america) who describes sucintly many things on the cuban society. Some months ago she was arrested then released by the cuban government.

Cuban chiming in, living in Canada, left perfectly legally through proper paperwork in 02 with family, shit does happen, it's just a matter of money. The real issue is whether or not the host country accepts you, most countries don't accept Cubans because of pressure from several American laws that are earmarks of the Embargo and other lawful sanctions against the island. This ironically, is a stalwart of the Cuban community in Florida today, but even more tragically, it is the old 1% that self-exiled themselves before their liquid wealth was seized after they lost their property who have kept a strong Republican jingoism alive in Florida. Marco Rubio is the current manifestation of a world-view many American born Cubans hold. It is ideological, very black-and-white and will only serve to undo quite a lot of the advances from the revolution. Don't get me wrong, I disagree whole-heartedly with Stalinism and it's morph through Fidel's spectrum. But Cuba as a nation was made stronger and healthier.

I got asked out by a gay Cuban nigger while in S. America. He's the only one I've ever met so I think I've got a skewed image of them. I do love their music though.

>>7584968 Americanfag here.... I'll easily admit several things concerning Cuba: * America REALLLLLLLLY fucked over Cuba after winning Cuba's freedom after the Spanish-American War * Castro was the least assholish Communist leader of them all ("least" being the key word) That is to say... America treated Cuba like their own personal toilet. I don't blame Cubans for wanting to show us up back then, especially when you had to deal with shitheads like this guy (picture related). Worse, the US Gov't treated all potential Cuban leaders—like Castro—like shit, and let US corporations run rampant across the land. What always got me was how much Castro actually LOVED America in the beginning (sending a letter to FDR as a kid, leaving a wreath at the Lincoln Memorial, etc)... it's my understanding that Castro wanted to work with the US Gov't to help Cuba and the Cubans, but the Gov't ignored him. And so now we had to deal with 50-ish years of Cuban dickery... but I can't say we didn't deserve it. As for Castro being the "least assholish" of all Communist leaders.... I'm not going to say Castro was a saint. He was a dick. But relative to all the other Communist leaders (Stalin, Pol Pot, Mao, the Kim family), he was the least worst. Kinda tied with Gorby too. In the end, I know we're not going to see much of a change in the relationship between Cuba and the US, so long as the people who remembered what happened back in the 50's and during the Revolution are still alive. It won't be until us grandkids of those guys are running the show that we'll begin to see changes, simply because us grandkids had NOTHING to do with these policies and shitty decisions. Besides, I'd like to try one of those Cuban cigars I've been hearing to much of... :)

People (especially my government) need to realize dictatorships aren't always bad. Libya is the only African nation within the "High" human development range. Their literacy rates are also some of the highest in Africa at 90% for males...

2 hours later 7585396 Anonymous
>>7585361 Well, depends on how you want to define "good" or "bad". Short term benefits, but eventual revolution against the state = bad or good? Short term negatives, but at least you guarantee a stable system = bad or good? Is it good enough that it works "for now" as opposed to "as far as we can see"?

I got a bottle of Cuban rum for christmas. It was pretty damn fine. I think the US government should probably ease off the whole embargo business, 'cause y'know, it's kinda evil. I mean, the Cold war has been over for two decades, and at this stage I think the only reason it's still in force is because it's been around for so long and nobody can be fucked to repeal it.

>>7585485 Never underestimate the power of lobbyists and political calculation. Neither party is willing to upset the Cuban exiles, since they're a key voting group in Florida and Florida is a key state in national elections.

3 hours later 7585676 Anonymous
>>7585545 ESPECIALLY not the GOP, because they just got their asses handed to them by NOT accounting for the Latino vote. The embargo won't end until Castro (at least Fidel, possibly also Raul) dies.
