Why so sneaky and underhanded Japan?

It was hardly a surprise attack. Tension had been building for a long time, and a warning had been issued by the Whitehouse a few days beforehand. Regional commanders just didn't act on it well enough. The Japs thought a show of force would cowl the Yanks into submission and they would seek a treaty on favourable terms. Instead they got the shit kicked out of them.

>A whole fucking navy with dozens of ships and hundreds of very noisy planes >Pearl Harbor having a radar tower or two capable of detecting any suspicious movement taking place off shore >Still calling it sneaky, with the understanding that "How could we possibly know that there was a hostile Japanese fleet approaching?"

15 min later 7559594 Anonymous
>>7559580 Because they knew it was coming. They just chose to be quiet about it. They needed something big to convince the American population that it was worth entering the war. Pearl Harbour was it. There's a reason why 9/11 is sometimes referred to as another Pearl Harbour. The US government saw it coming and did nothing to stop it.

>>7559668 But according to your theory the government needed to convince the population. But convince them about what ? The necessity of the war ? When Japan had decided to declare the war and to attack them in their territory ? That makes no sense, if the USA knew that an attack was coming, it would have been way more effective to win a big great victory at Pearl Harbour, people would have followed since the Japanese were the ones who attacked.

>>7559752 No. It would have been seen as, we turned the Japs away so we can sit tight for now. There was no public support for an American entrance into the second world war until the reports of Pearl Harbour came through. They were then gunning for Jap blood. Every country that has entered a war with another (unless they're the initial aggressor) has done so due to a large attack on them. Look at the Gulf of Tonkin incident. The Americans were attacked and it led to them going into Vietnam. Before anyone jumps on me, I know there is a dispute about whether or not it actually happened.

It was a recurring theme of WWII. >Britain and France should have known Germany would attack in 1939. >Russia should have known Germany would attack in 1941. >USA should have known Japan would attack in 1941. >Germany should have known the Allies would attack in 1944 But they all managed to be caught off-guard.

>>7559843 >No. It would have been seen as, we turned the Japs away so we can sit tight for now. When Japan had not only declared the war, but also attacked them on their territory ? Japan wasn't Vietnam, Japan was an empire with a huge fleet capable of attacking the west coast. It wasn't just some small nation the US could beat in a few months.

The problem inherent to any state with democratic ideals, and particularly one so large and inherently mixed as the United States, is that they can very rarely come to a solid consensus. Unfortunately, Our government has no scruples when it comes to forcing our hands in order to comply with their military or social aims. They have learned that we will do whatever they want if they place us in a a state of either anger or, more useful, fear. Anger and outrage were our starting keynotes. The revolutionaries used the anger of the American colonials over taxes to trigger the Revolutionary War by sacrificing a few minutemen in the opening skirmishes. Our government tried again to force us into a rage-induced wroth in 1812, but it didn't work as well due to some outlying issues and the War was never truly begun in earnest. In the First World War, our government put weapons and high-explosive artillery shells on a passenger liner filled with Americans knowing full well that the Germans would catch wind and sink it, propelling intervention into popular support via public outrage. In the Second World War, our government cut off Imperial Japan's access to American steel and oil, knowing full well that the Japs would retaliate. They took our modern ships out of harbor and let the older, less useful ones be sacrificed in order to let mass public outrage and thirst for revenge overpower our intelligent isolationist standpoint. 9/11, same thing. The American peoples' rage and terror was exploited by our government and those behind it to get what they want. Our politicians are nothing but Romans in suits. Don't hate us for what they do.
