Hey guys. I went to India this summer. Southern India, to be precise (Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka). I can contribute to this thread with holiday photos, if you wish.
For those unaware, southern India is the Dravidian part of India. The people are darker-skinned and speak non-Indo-European languages (all of them have Tamil as their root language).
Kerala and Karnataka are 27% and 14% muslim respectively.

Indian beach, taken with my Dad's Blackberry. Background info: this was at Varkala, the southern tip of India, on the Arabian sea side. Waves were very strong. Very funny because when Westerners went in the water, the lifeguard said nothing, but as soon as Indians tried to go further than 5 m into the waves, he got up and whistled at them to get out.

Not really, my mother told me to do it, so I did.
Nothing happened, I washed my face with cold water from a bottle afterwards anyway, I'm guessing she knew.
Imagine somebody throwing a dead pidgeon at your face, it won't kill you or give you a disease, but it is a bit icky. However, I was told not to drink it and to close my eyes + mouth etc.

Also, we took daily malaria tablets, starting 1 week before we left and ending 3 days after we came back. Pretty expensive shit. And we were in a very low-level malaria risk zone.
Regarding mosquitoes: they were a nuisance but nothing intolerable.
Tropical areas are sweltering though. Southern India is a very humid land. I start to sweat immediately when I go outside.

Some areas of cities, like fishmarkets and streets where the sewer had overflown during the monsoon, smelled pretty dire. Fishmarket especially is overpowering, and made my eyes water.
Rest of southern India was nothing special in terms of bad smells. Plent of very nice smells though. the jasmine clumps in women's hair, for example...

Ok last one from me, since thread has petered out. What you see in this picture is a rice-powder drawing in the ground, usually next to the porch of a house (either in front of inside the house). It is supposed to provide food for small beings of this world, because in certain forms of Hinduism, you help all being, big and small. If you get closer, you can see ants and other small animals feeindg on the small granules of rice powder.
