Tell me about Australia, /int/. What's it like there? I desperately want to travel there in the next year. What cities would you suggest I see if I can only see 2-3?

>>6933395 Well Brisbane's a great city to go to if you want to be closer to the Sunshine Coast and the Gold Coast, which are great beach places. Can't go wrong with Cairns in the far north if you like seeing the Great barrier Reef or the Rainforests.

The country is fantastic but the people are annoying. As far as holidays go, there's not much to see, some theme parks, big beaches, a rock and some cities. Tourist ares charge at least 4x price of everything. Great place to live, bad place for a holiday.

OP, Australia is really expensive. Everywhere. But I love it here. Once you start to make friends with people, they can help you as locals know all the cheap places. Oh and everyone seems to think we are racists, which is part true, but it is our sense of humor foreigners don't understand. If you want beaches, go Brisbane. Massive city, go Sydney. Awesome meals, go Melbourne. And if you want steaming hot fucking weather, go Darwin.

Regardless of what >>6933511 said, some people here will in fact look right down their nose at you if they think you are an American so be sure to point out that you aren't if people seem a little awkward. But from my small traveling experience My own country, New Zealand and Canada have some of the most polite citizens in the world by a long shot and what I might consider rude is standard practice in some countries. Some people may be offended by the way Australians and Kiwis talk. Words like "cunt" in some countries can be an almost unspeakable word while in the southern hemisphere it is almost as casual as "shit". Also, take note of "Tall poppy syndrome": http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tall_poppy_syndrome Of the Australian definition, Peter Hartcher of the Sydney Morning Herald writes; "(Australian) Citizens know that some among them will have more power and money than others... But according to the unspoken national ethos, no Australian is permitted to assume that he or she is better than any other Australian. How is this enforced? By the prompt corrective of levelling derision. It has a name - The "Tall Poppy Syndrome." The tallest flowers in the field will be cut down to the same size as all the others. This is sometimes misunderstood... It isn't success that offends Australians. It's the affront committed by anyone who starts to put on superior airs."

Our capital and most popular tourist destination is Coober Pedy, you should go there. I wouldn't go to the rest of the country, it's a shithole.

1 hours later 6933930 Anonymous
>>6933925 So don't be offended when people say things that might otherwise be taken as racist or sexist. It is a strong aspect of the culture that because everyone is equal, everyone can equally be made fun of. I should point out though that the important aspect of what makes the humour acceptable is that it is done in jest and if someone was to actually try treating somebody different for something they were born with they would be frowned upon and most likely someone in a crowd would have a few things to say to them. In short, make fun of anyone for anything as long as you don't actually treat them bad because of it. If you don't make fun of them because of their race/sex, you are treating them differently because of it. I digress. The east coast is great, not much at all in the rest of the country, a lot of tourists vastly underestimate the sheer vastness of the country, it's the same size as the continental USA with 1/10th the population so don't expect to see everything. The Main places on the east coast are Brisbane/Gold Coast, Sydney, Melbourne and the island state of Tasmania.

1 hours later 6933932 Anonymous
>>6933930 It really depends what you are into. I think Tasmania is a beautiful place to visit but only because I live in Queensland and I never get to see snow and things like cherries and peaches growing wild. But being Canadian this would be normal for you so I would say see the tropical parts of the country. Brisbane and the Gold Coast are only a half hour apart and are both decent sized modern cities with great public transport etc. The Gold Coast, aside from awesome beaches (If you are a surfer, the gold coast is where the "Surfers Paradise" beach is.) it has things like bungie jumping, jet boats and crap while Brisbane is full of museums, art galleries and so on. Melbourne is down south but is meant to be the worlds most livable city according to some, lots to do. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melbourne In Queensland and New South Wales the main sport is rugby league but the other states all play Aussie rules football which I con only really describe as gaelic football, played with a rugby ball, on a cricket pitch and some other stuff just thrown in for fun. Given the fact that it is played on a cricket pitch the stadiums are fucking massive and the sport has some very passionate fans down south so the atmosphere is amazing, don't worry about it if you don't go to Melbourne because it wont be the same. But if you go there it would definitely be worth a look. Some players go and do stints in the American football competition as kickers for the money because they easily kick the ball the length of a grid-iron field with such accuracy. http://youtu.be/X_hqosNvv5E Tourism ad: http://youtu.be/WMGuw1d2ojU
