>The specific numbers of casualties are hotly disputed. It has been estimated that 300,000 Paraguayans, mostly civilians, died. It has also been written that up to 90% of the male population may have been killed, though this figure is without support.
Thankfully, after this, our army just protect borders or help in UN peace troops.

The Dutch West India Company seized Recife and parts of northeastern Brazil during the Eighty Years' War and Portugal's time in the Iberian Union. The Dutch promoted little immigration of their own, did not get along well with the Portuguese plantation owners already present in the region and did a shit job garrisoning Recife and other Dutch-held towns, and so lost that part of Brazil relatively quickly.
The Portuguese monarchy itself resided in Brazil for a bit during the Napoleonic Wars, which is the origin of the Brazilian Empire-- part of the Portuguese royal family stayed behind after the wars ended, because they liked it so much or something I guess. The Empire came to an end when the emperor at the time abolished slavery and pissed off the rich people.

The slaveowners really shouldn't have been as pissed as they were, in hindsight. Slavery was abolished there 20 years or so after we had our civil war and finally got rid of it, and unlike our emancipation the Emperor offered slaveowners some sort of compensation for all those freed slaves.
I think that's what happened, at least.

Part true. We used to be more catholic but protestants and no-religion people are growing up in statistics
We are only 65% catholic now.
Anyway I was looking in some demographic schemes and I saw this:
>About the sentence "Umbanda (african religion) is a Devil thing", 57% agreed (83% among Evangelical Protestants, 53% among Catholics and 12% among Umbandists).
>About the sentence "Jews only think about money", 49% agreed.
>About the sentence "Muslims advocate terrorism", 49% agreed.
I hue'd.

Brazilians are a very warm and kind people but are also very patriotic towards their particular region. Brazil has a huge class disparity. They love bunda (hueheuheuheue) and music, like Bossa Nova. The South is generally separatist, the Northeast is warm and cute as fuck, and everyone else is in-between. You like to ficar (have casual dates and shit). That's about all I know.

New World emperors mostly seem like they were pretty cool guys. The more I read about Mexico's Habsburg emperor, the more I like the guy. It's a pity he was just installed by the French military and was more or less a puppet, because he seemed to really take his job seriously and had some quite enlightened views of rulership.
58 min later 6895994 Anonymous
>>6895611
From what I remember is that the slavery wasn't the issue. The emperor was at the time very popular with the people and most of the older elite but the new "young guns" were for some reason either discontent with or just apathetic towards the monarchy. At the same time the emperors sons all died before maturity and he lost faith in the continuation of the monarchy as he found women to be unsuited to lead a monarchy.
At the same time some radical elements of the military were plotting to overthrow the monarchy and replace it with a republican dictatorship. So when the coup d'etad was commenced the emperor ordered the loyalist troops and commanders to cease all resistance and thus the monarchy came to an end quite peacefully.

Probably because I'm somewhat of a history-buff. I' especially interested in empires throughout history so most of my knowledge of brazilian history is limited to your time as part of the portuguese empire and you own imperial phase.
I have a very limited knowledge of the time after the coup d'etat but I could generalize that it consisted of a succession of weak republics and corrupt dictatorships/military regimes all the way until the drafting of your current constitution and the stabilization of your country.
