Can we have a discussion about the English language. What do you consider "proper English." Every country where English is spoken predominantly has its very own dialect of the Language. So, for example, do you consider someone who speaks the worst English accent (OI M8 BET-ER FOOKIN ENGLISH, INNIT) superior to someone who speaks American English decently? Dialects are weird.

I prefer someone who doesn't repeat words within a sentence, and speaks the "standard" form of the language. No chav speak, no hood slang. Oddly enough, though, certain phrases, like "it's all good" are now acceptable.

America. Thank you for The Simpsons, South Park and futurama. All awesome examples of how US English can rock. However why does your country domestically look down on other accents? >>6873051 The American affection for firearms comes mostly from the Second Amendment of the Constitution, which guarantees citizens the right to bear arms. The reason this was implemented originally was so that militia could be formed should British forces attempt to attack the States. Britain is obviously no longer an enemy of America, but the Amendment is still there, so citizens are still guaranteed gun rights and the ability to form militia. It's outdated, but it's how the States run.

>>6872998 The US didn't 'change' any spellings. The spelling of English words wasn't completely standardized until relatively recently. I think Australians have the most laid back accents in the English world. Our pronunciations of words is a lot more softer and flexible. Which is why it's so easy for Australians to learn or do other accents - because we don't really need to "unlearn" anything - there are no habits in the Aussie accent that is hard to move away from. American accents are the easiest for me to do, I don't know if it's because of all the American TV shows and gaming I watched growing up, but it's generally more constructed and common sounding.

I'm Belgian, and I've been interested in the differences between accents in the English language, and I must say that I find NZ and Aus to be the most similar, with Aus having the most extreme vowel sounds (i = ee, oo = ew (also happens in NZ)). I also find that in Aus and NZ there is alot of omission of the letters 'R' and 'L'. 'R' becomes 'ah' and 'L' becomes 'ehw' (like all = awe). I find American accents to be VERY annoying, don't quite know why. They also tend to be quite loud and all that. No offence. I think it makes sense to say that the English accent is 'proper', because as was said before, that's where the language started. All other accents are just variants of the original, though the original must have developed in itself too.
