Post in this thread if your country owns offshore islands of any kind. Post a pic or tell us something about it. HARD MODE: you've actually visited it.

Ours is a tropical paradise 350 km off the coast. Due to ecological concerns and its preservation status, tourism is heavily regulated, going as far as banishing possession of certain non-degradable materials (glass bottles, plastic cases) from visiting tourists. Still, lovely place, pop. around 3000, some of the best-looking beaches on eath, and sharks all-year round. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fernando_de_Noronha

Yes Norfolk Island is just one. It is SO fucking boring there. Honestly. Christmas island is meant to be even more dull.

Puerto Rico Currently a U.S. territory and possibly a new state shortly. I visited there this year. Food is great, the city of San Juan reminded me of Southern California, while Arecibo reminded me of the community aspect of New York City. Water was 70-80 F and every beach was fucking beautiful. Only issue I had was all the noise of animals and insects at night.

Numerous, Guam and PR aren't states (though PR might get promoted sometime soon) but despite the fact they can still serve in the US military. A lot of fellow Americlaps don't even know this. Normally people get butthurt about this fact but getting a free opportunity to [voluntarily] join the US military is a positive thing.

What defines "offshore" islands? The Florida Keys are pretty far from the mainland, but you can drive their on bridges. Then there's Puerto Rico, Guam, and American Samoa.

>Heard Island and McDonald Islands Cold, barren, and windswept islands in the southern Indian Ocean, closer to Antarctica than any other continent. They have the only two active volcanoes on Australian territory, one of which (Mawson Peak) is higher than the highest mountain on the mainland.

57 min later 6796651 Anonymous (Attu_sat.jpg 540x334 66kB)
Attu is part of the Aleutian islands off the coast of Alaska. Nothing lives there except moss, sea birds, and 20 scientists. There aren't even any native Aleuts. That didn't stop the Japanese from deciding it was strategically important during WW2, and several battles were fought in the Aleutians in what became known as the Aleutian campaign, the most important of which happened on Attu.

Dún Aonghasa prehistoric fort on the island of Inis Mór off the coast of County. Galway. Have visted twice before. Irish school students are sometimes sent to the island for several weeks over the summer in order to practice Irish. Island is considered part of the ''Gaeltacht''

>>6796120 We've got Gotland. It's the largest island in the Baltic sea. My picture is taken in Visby, Gotland's only town and a world heritage site. The island is pretty irrelevant now, but during the Viking ages it was one of the richest areas in Europe, and some argue that it's the place where the Goths originated. Gutnish, the language of Gotland is the closest relative to the Gothic language. Over all, I'd say Gotland has one of the most fascinating and weird histories of Northern Europe. I've been there many times, it's a very popular tourist destination.
