/int/, what are we more likely to have in say, 500 years? The ruins of over 5000 years of civilization, or a civilization undreamed of?

in 2000 I watched movies where there was flying cars when they talk about 2012 we are advancing really slow, sad truth

>>6720280 i beg to differ. technology is still advancing at a great rate. we are on upward side of the bell curve. providing there isn't a nuclear apocalypse in the next 500 years i think the more advanced 1st world countries will be closer to the Utopian mega citys also >movies >realistic

>>6720021 My guess? Something even worse than both. I suppose it would qualify as the second, but I think that it'll be my worst nightmare: A completely globalized world with one massive culture, run by massive corporations, that lives in mega cities. Essentially a utopia: the perfect world, where nothing goes wrong, but the price we will have to pay will be so great that I'd kill myself. Essentially a world without culture, without struggle, without stories to tell. A place where all stories must be set in the past due to cameras and the internet, where people simply have sex not out of love but to continue the species. The lower classes will be a black hole of culture, with no variety, no taste, and no ability to create art or do anything but conform. The upper classes will be able to pay for culture, but it will be a sad immitation of what has been lost. Oh wait, that's modern America. Basicly, take my nation and turn it's cultural toilet into a black hole that absorbs everyone else in the world. That's my nightmare scenario. It's more likely that a highly balkanized world of little countries is the most likely. The nation state has failed, leaving cultural marxism and titanic wars in its wake.

We wont be around in 500 years. Peak Phosphorus will of wiped us clean away. If somehow we get past anthropological issues, we are due for a 10,000 year ice age in 1000 years so all resources will have to be spent on how to deal with that. It will be pretty much a slave for survival society.

The 2nd one

1 hours later 6720881 Anonymous
>>6720824 Phosphorus is needed for all life on the planet. No phosphorous no food. It takes millions of years to accumulate from marine reefs. Our current fertiliser usage is plowing through it at a speed that is far more dangerous than peak oil use and side effects. Along with nitrogen its also causing the same pollutant sink problems as oil causes for our atmosphere in our oceans. If anything will stop civilisation dead in its tracks its running out of phosphorous. Its a deeply serious problem.

1 hours later 6720891 swefagtarpgirl
>>6720769 Which is why we need to establish colonies on Mars, like, now. Domed cities, underground habitats, whatever the fuck it takes. 10.000 people minimum to ensure genetic diversity, and self-sustaining. We must make the human race entirely independent from the planet Earth. Only then will we have truly become masters of our own destiny, and overcome nature.

Can't it be a little of both?

1 hours later 6720917 Anonymous
First one unless the human race stops being greedy chodes. Which don't happen.

>>6720881 Food production won't cease if we run out of phosphate, it will slow down considerably though, as we'll have to go back to traditional farming and fertilizing which is condierably slower. So yes, mass starvation, but hardly extinction. (though I suppose a war over resources might very well ensue, and THAT wipes us the fuck of the surface of the planet)

1 hours later 6720930 Anonymous
>>6720891 and then pull the phosphorus out of our asses

1 hours later 6720938 Anonymous
>>6720891 To do this we need to figure out how to make sustainable critical element extraction from our own waste viable. Eg, extracting phosphorous from our piss, which ironically Sweden has implemented a sewage plan which now does so- first in the world. Phosphorous cannot be mined on mars, as there is no reefs. All phosphorous in the end must come from Earth and really should be treated as more valuable than diamonds and gold. without it, everything on earth, not just humans is utterly fucked. With teh exception of a few extremephiles

1 hours later 6720959 swefagtarpgirl
>>6720938 How can this be, for it to be essential it can't just be confined to rock and shit, can it? Isn't there "free" phosphorous?

1 hours later 6720960 Anonymous
>>6720926 Human nature will not allow entire cultures to starve to death without an all out fight. Ironically if this were to happen remaining phosphorous would be wasted quicker as its used in many military devices.

1 hours later 6720976 Anonymous
>>6720959 Yes there is particulate phosphorous but its particulate its extraction is much harder than essentially mineral extraction. The Swedish sewage model works of particulate extraction.

>>6720914 Best chance.

1 hours later 6720989 swefagtarpgirl
>>6720976 Right. So the threat is to food security and not so much the ecology of the planet then? The swedish model, is it at all effective? Or is it the phosphate version of solar power?

1 hours later 6720993 Anonymous (1345864799247.jpg 720x567 34kB)
Humanity contract a terrible incurable disease and we will all have to mutate into furries to survive.

1 hours later 6721016 Anonymous
>>6720938 You don't need phosphate for soylent green.

1 hours later 6721039 Anonymous
>>6720989 Its a threat to both, the two are totally intertwined. All our food essentially comes from ecosystem services anyway. Its a little like Chaos theory you can tinker with something small in one place that has a massive effect somewhere else. The Swedish model is the most effective urban based approach worldwide so far. Better agriculture practice is needed rurally especially nutrient capture and reuse. If this doesnt happen in significant proportions very shortly we may as well just sit around getting drunk and jerking off until the end. There plenty of models and theories floating around easily found online speculating we only have under a century of phosphorous left. Unless someone figures out how to synthesis it, its going to be an almighty headache in future.

1 hours later 6721097 swefagtarpgirl
>>6721039 What I mean is, that since we mine it from rock, it shouldn't affect the free phosphorous in nature. If anything, it should increase, making overgrowth a problem rather than shit dying (overgrowth is a big problem, at least here, due to phosphorous contamination)

Probably a mix of both Imagine you were an ancient Babylonian sent to present day mesoptoamia. He'd see his house is gone, his former city a desert and ruins. He'd think civilization was gone, now that mesopotamia is an arid, inbred shithole filled with poverty, sand, allah ackbar and sewage He'd be surprised to see that instead civilization had merely moved thousands of miles away. So 500 years from now, some place like India might be a 1st world social democracy paradise, while Europe a backwards wilderness of impoverished arabs and blacks

Urban civilization will have fallen, giving way to a post-scarcity tribal society. People will be unimaginably wealthier, happier, stronger, and smarter. So, on Earth at least, more like your first picture but those people are archeologists rather then post-apocalyptic survivors.

>>6721161 Do you really want to have this information out there now? Governments are aware of it, same with scientists- like I said a lot of papers have been and are being written about it, its one of those problems where working away quietly for a solution is best rather than promote panic and even more of an economic food bubble. If someone smart out there can synthesise or find an alternative then there is no problem. If not the economic bubble that is food production globally will inflate at a ridiculous speed due to it being a quantifiable finite resource- unlike now where its a resource that is heavily wasted.

They say they will get net immigration down to under 100,000 by 2015, they are dreaming, it wont happen.
