Hey /int/, I'm guessing you guys have heard of Hurricane Sandy. Any thought about it from people form other countries? How would you say it compares to disasters there? American Southerners, how do you guys down there think it compares to hurricanes you've seen? >pic related, the neighborhood where I used to live in

It's a tropical storm. I've probably been through at least a double-digit amount of storms in my life worse than Sandy. That said I'm not going to pretend New York is pussies for the damage or something. It's NY, they generally don't get hurricanes so of course they're unprepared.

i wouldn't know because this country only saw one major natural disaster in its entire lifespan and it was in 1755. pic related Lisbon was raped by an earthquake, following a tsunamy and fires spread all over.

Sandy isn't really that bad compared to the earthquakes in Japan. I wish Japan didn't have gays.

>>6512059 Yeah, Voltaire parodied the rise in auto-da-fé's following the earthquake in Candide. The size of the disaster convinced them that God was pissed, so they started burning everybody that looked even remotely like a heretic, infidel or Jew.

Never in my life have I seen a hurricane here, but they look pretty cool in TV. You just can't compare them to earthquakes though. You can hide, run from hurricanes and you can even predict them, but earthquakes... oh no. Those shits hit you when you least expect it: >Want to run? Fuck you, nowhere to flee. >Want to hide? Shit's everywhere already. >What's that? You live in the coast? Tsunami says hi! >Want to fucking stay alive? Just sit tight and hope for the best. Or run like a madman. Hurricanes only beat them in duration, since earthquakes won't last more than 5 min.

2 hours later 6512432 Anonymous
>>6511966 Pretty much that. Where I live we have a lot more infrastructure in place to accommodate such events, with insane building codes for stormwater drainage. Moreover people and businesses are more aware of such events and will, for example, pay tree removal services to take down trees that are likely to get blown over in a storm, and the power utilities are better prepared to fix widespread outages from storm damages. NY of course is unprepared as this is an exceedingly rare event for them. But come December or January some smug Northeasterners are going to berate some part of the South when they shut down from not having the infrastructure/individual preparedness to deal with 2 inches of snow. Now I can bring Sandy up and put them in their place!

2 hours later 6512434 Anonymous

Murrica, boast about having large houses, but that's made possible because they have lots of free open space. Lots of land means it's cheap, then they build their houses out of plywood and straw, so they're cheap. So large, cheap homes are accessible to all. Then they get blown away.

>>6512421 I admit I'm basically assuming Chile is like America. If it is, you're not using worse materials. If anything shit from the 80's is generally more poorly constructed for whatever reason.

2 hours later 6512477 Anonymous
>>6512439 Let me explain. We get an earthquake every 25 years. Right after the quake, people start building with specific materials made to withstand another earthquake, but as time passes most people forget about the quakes and start building with shitty materials in shitty locations. Then the earthquake hits, modern buildings fall, and the cycle repeats.

From a New Orleanian who is used to flooding in urban areas: STAY THE FUCK OFF THE FLOODED STREETS!!!! Why? Because manhole covers get unseated and leave open holes that if you fall in, you won't be coming out of. Think about it as the strongest riptide possible. You can't swim out of it. You can't escape once you're in. You'll die a painful death drowning and scared. Unless you can be 100% sure of where you're walking, don't risk it. Every time it floods in New Orleans, there's always a death or two (at least) that happens this way and it's entirely avoidable. Take care of yourselves and be safe. Just because the rain has stopped doesn't mean that flood waters are safe to wade in.
