Seems like the NYC/ DC area has never been prepared for a massive hurricane. As in, Armageddon. I'm morbidly curious as to what happen if an ultra hurricane did its worst through lower Manhattan. (Note: the worst area to be in is on the northern side.) Skyscrapers flooded? Streets flooded? How freaked out is everyone? E.g. in home stores and grocery stores, people scrambling for the last items in the store. Southern Illinois, btw. Good luck, and be safe out there.

>>6469528 I think that half the freaking out about this is actually because we unconsciously picture an NYC Katrina, and they know that we are frighteningly unprepared. I don't believe Sandy will be our Katrina, but the climate is changing and this is the second hurricane to come this way in two years (this in a city where a hurricane was previously an extremely rare occurrence.) A Category 4 or 5 storm hitting lower Manhattan would be a civilization-shifting (ending?) event. I am not sure that people are super-freaked out (there is a loud Halloween party going on here on my block). I think most people are pretty prepared for this storm. I work in a Manhattan grocery store and it was packed out, I can't even tell you how many people were in the store today. But like I said, I think there's a lot of anxiety about this situation. And that's good, maybe we can goad the benevolent statesmen who impartially and fairly administer our affairs into taking necessary measures.
