Does anyone wonder why the US is investing so much into it's military? It's a bit strange. Lucky I'm a citizen

Because we've essentially been at non-stop war for 200 years due to doctrines and policies that take into consideration our geopolitical, resource, and monetary interests. For instance, the Monroe Doctrine (1865) says that we have to keep european intervention out of the Eastern Hemisphere. This justified the Spanish/American War and anything pre-1915. The Truman Doctrine (1947) says that we should send money, arms, and/or troops to countries threatened by communism. This justified just about anything from the 50's to the 90's. Though, it can be contested that Vietnam was begun in the interests of tin mine owners fretting losing their stuff. Due to the existence of policies of this nature, our military must be made fit to meet needs of them. This, of course, is the starting point. After that it becomes about money and resources. Oil is an interest of the USA, if we don't have enough to run our infrastructure, it is said that we will collapse. To run efficiently, we must secure these interests. But really, lobbyists for companies push these issues. There's something about the whole South America ordeal (school of the americas) that I don't know why we went in other than to assert dominance and regional control. Panama was a big thing, obviously, because of the canal. But the others are lost on me. . . . . . And then there's the other stuff, which is really just about geopolitical bologna. It's not about dictators, lack of democracy or anything. We've placed people like that into power.

>>6443764 Think about it like this. You're at school. You're one of the baddest motherfuckers on the playground (and in space). You don't particularly like this other badass mofo because he's after the girl you're after. You don't fight. You seek and gain allies (of weaker fortitude) in case you do fight, and so does the other guy. One day, two of the smaller dudes feud, and you think they'll fight. So, you give advice and train your smaller guy, and so does the other badass mofo. If allies of the other guy intervene, you have to be ready to intervene to protect your alliance. Because if he loses, then you have been weakened. If that does happen, then everyone gets pulled in and you have a brawl (world war). Which, then, you would need to be at a strength greater than your foes. It's not that we beef up our military for the current stuff, but where we think our enemies are going to increase their strength. It's just Game Theory

>>6441657 the government spends so much on the Department of Defense for a few reasons: 1. Having the best weapons means that no country can ever defeat us (or so goes the theory) 2. Constantly purchasing and upgrading planes, ships, and guns acts as a stimulus to the economy 3. Keeps American Universities on top and helps research and development of small, unprofitable projects until they become profitable or useful (a good example would be NASA and Velcro, or the Internet) 4. supporting the military is an easily advertisable populist move A good example where all this comes together is during World War Two, as the government dumped insane amounts of money into weapons development which postwar was used in the civilian marketplace. For example: long range bombers --> jet liners atomic bombs --> cancer treatments battlefield rations --> m&ms jeeps --> cars lightweight aircraft materials --> plastics/Velcro/glow in the dark stuff military transports --> semi trucks it goes on. It really is amazing how much stuff we use comes from the DOD

As much as I hate the term (it sounds silly): the Military-Industrial Complex. There's an entire segment of the American economy devoted to pretending to be useful to the US Department of Defense. They buy politicians, and the politicians buy their products with taxpayer money. Americans generally don't give a fuck, and most of the few who do think it's unpatriotic to stop it.
