Americans have no national ID cards, instead they use a voter ID for voting, a driving ID for driving, a college ID for going to university, a health ID for their insurance, a border ID if they travel to Canada or Mexico and a Passport if they want to travel to any other country. Oh yeah, they also need to use their social security number to sign up for a bank account which can be easily guessed and abused since it was never supposed to be a form of identification. That's why despite all these different forms of identification (which are all different depending on the state or even county, with varying degrees of recognition between them, btw) identity theft is rampant in American. They even have advertisement on TV for 'identity protection' where private companies are 'watching' their identities and protecting them from being stolen. But having a convenient national ID card for all these things are considered to be 'surveillance' for some reason.
