There is a lot of cheap empty land here which you can buy for a couple thousand dollars and the materials would only cost another couple thousand dollars. You have to actually know what you're doing when it comes to carpentry though, which is the biggest difference between modern people and our ancestors.

My grandfather was an architect and retired by the 80's. He said he would never do it after talking to younger guys in the trade having to deal with all the restrictions and paperwork. Everything we do is made intentionally difficult and costly while someone else benefits.
