So, I have a pilot MR, and have been trying to use it with diamine onyx black ink (I like a nice, bold black). I'm having some flow issues with it, though. Starts out fine, but after a minute and a half of writing the nib goes dry. People say the metropolitan isn't a dry pen, so I wonder what's going on. This would be a fucking awesome pen if I could just work out this issue.

If you really like the design, chinks make decent Safari knockoffs that actually are fine, if I'm not mistaken most of them use the same nibs and feeds so pick one that looks the least shitty visually. >>71005854 Fountain pens are a meme. I'm an artist by trade and I carry a sketchbook, I bought a few fountain pens over the years, my conclusions: >If you buy a pen <150$ (entry price of a gold nib) your steel nib won't be flexible and will have no line variation worth a shit, so your quality of line will be that of a regular pen >only Japanese EF nibs have a line as fine as a fineliner, all other nibs are too fat >A non-gel ballpoint lets you make faint marks by pressing lightly. Fountain pens do not allow for this and will always leave a dark line >fountain pen ink will feather/bleed on most light paper, good luck signing a document >Fountain pen ink is not waterproof unless you buy expensive inks >Fountain pen ink dyes your hands since it's not pigmented, good luck washing that off >If you lose a fountain pen or break the nib you lose a lot of money >fountain pens will run out of ink while you use them unless they have large capacity (most pens have tiny refills / converters) >fountain pen nibs may be misaligned out of the factory regardless of price range, and you will need to get the pen replaced or fixed >fountain pens will clog if you don't use them often (not a problem for me but don't expect a fountain pen to work if you use it once a week) There is NO reason to buy a fountain pen, and even less so if you just need to write. A ballpoint pen or a gel pen of good quality will always be a better, cheaper, more reliable option. If you are an artist and you need a versatile ink tool then a fountain pen is an OK compromise but a disposable fineliner is almost the same, if you want the best line quality and you're autistic like me then you can use a dip pen (which outclasses any gold nib for less than a dollar) or a disposable brushpen which only takes a bit more skill to use. They even make pens that are like fountain pens except they take replaceable manga nibs. All these options are waterproof or even marker proof so you can use watercolor or markers on them.

>>71019727 >so your quality of line will be that of a regular pen Other pens won't have shading which is quite aesthetic by itself. >only Japanese EF nibs have a line as fine as a fineliner, all other nibs are too fat Why would you need a thin line for writing? I can understand it if you need to write chinese characters or something like that, but just for writing roman letters this is all preference. >fountain pen ink will feather/bleed on most light paper, good luck signing a document Depends on how dry your pen and ink are, as well as the paper. I have no issues with this and I do sign all my documents with one. >Fountain pen ink is not waterproof unless you buy expensive inks Pelikan 4001 Black-Blue is cheap as fuck and waterproof. >If you lose a fountain pen or break the nib you lose a lot of money You can apply this to any pen. There's also cheap disposable fountain pens. >fountain pens will run out of ink while you use them unless they have large capacity (most pens have tiny refills / converters) You heard it here first folks, Other pens have infinite ink. You do know that you can just replace the cartridge on most pens once they run out? Hell, you even get a convenient way to check your ink level at any time. >fountain pen nibs may be misaligned out of the factory regardless of price range, and you will need to get the pen replaced or fixed I wouldn't say regardless of price range, once you get to more expensive pens they're all tested and write well. But yes it is a problem and fountain pens should really be test written before buying. >fountain pens will clog if you don't use them often (not a problem for me but don't expect a fountain pen to work if you use it once a week) They may dry out and take a couple seconds to write again, but clogging will only happen if you use inks not intended for them. I will also add that if you bought a fountain pen for any kind of art you fucked up. They're writing instruments first and foremost.

>>71005996 Sounds like your pen's feed isn't able to keep up with the nib. Try tweaking the nib to write a drier line.

These are my Top 4. I wish I had these back in school. They're all inexpensive too.

Ever since the last two years of university, I've been writing in pencil. At first it was to correct handwritten notes with an eraser. But I've come to love the ease of writing, the fact that no ink smears, that ink doesn't run out when it's very hot or won't write when it's cold like a ballpoint pen. I'm perfectly fine with a wooden pencil, but they do tend to get uncomfortable when they're shortened to a short stump. So this is what I use: a Staedtler Mars Micro 0.5mm pencil with a steel tip. It's loaded with HB mines which, on the scale from hard to soft, are right in the middle. Very comfortable. Can only recommend.
