it's just my opinion but several people share it.
If you hang out in the IRCs you'll see lots of people talking about ddossing before buying lately.
It's hard to distinguish from the outside whether it's massive users flocking the exchanges or a ddos, but unless these exchanges have really awful servers, i'm quite sure it's the second (look at the volume of trades on bitstamp, it's extremely low, wouldn't make sense to think the amount of users has kept the website offline for so long). If you look at the trade volume at the beginning of the downtime for both bitstamp and mtgox, it seems too low to have put the websites offline by itself. At least this is my opinion.
Imo the mass sell off was triggered by the lag (what else?) not vice versa. Especially cause people have been advising to sell if there's a lot of lag...
