If you look at the trade volume at the beginning of the downtime for both bitstamp and mtgox, it seems too low to have put the websites offline by itself. At least this is my opinion. Imo the mass sell off was triggered by the lag (what else?) not vice versa. Especially cause people have been advising to sell if there's a lot of lag...
