I thought it was funny for a while, but now I really don't get it.
Why are you mining LTC? It was a fun alt coin a few years ago, but why the sudden popularity increase?
Out of curiosity, how big of a dump would be needed to crash the LTC market?
14 min later 32935987 Anonymous
>>32935968
because you make assloads more if you mine LTC and convert it to BTC than with directly mining BTC
if you don't believe me check dustcoin

abandon the BTC ship, all aboard LTC.
it's currently at $4.5 to $5 and people are hoping that will increase to 1/4 of BTC. so the thought of around ~1000% increase attracts people
and this:

I have, and I understand that. Won't that change as the (LTC) difficulty increases?

If you believe in bitcoin, you should also expect at least one successful alt currency if, for no other reason, to allow people to arbitrage prices on exchanges.

19 min later 32936084 Anonymous
>>32936010
1 of 2 things will happen. either the difficulty will increase making it as difficult as mining bitcoin (or nearly unprofitable in electricity costs) or litecoins will rise in price making it a non-issue.
litecoin promoters hope for #2, i'm somewhat more skeptical and think the mtgox announcement is the only driving force behind litecoin but we will see.
22 min later 32936134 Anonymous
Still looking for an estimate on #LTC sold at once to crash the value.
25 min later 32936169 Anonymous
>>32936084
No shit, but that's all it needs. Remember, there's still 15,000 retards waiting in the queue for verification to buy Bitcoins. Imagine logging on and seeing there's another shiny new coin ready for speculatin' that'll jump in price like mad.
"BITCOINS DID CRAZY WELL LOOK AT THEM, I"D BE INSANE NOT TO BUY THESE AT $5! OH WAIT THEY'RE $30? STILL LET'S GET THEM! WAIT, $50? THEY'RE RISING SO FAST! IT'S THE NEXT BITCOIN!!!!"

Then it'll get pumped up by everyone purchasing your coin and the cycle continues.

I'm not familiar with LTC man, I got on the BTC train in 2011, roommate mined LTC for a bit, BTC aswell. He has a substantial amount, and I was curious if we could crash the market for fun.
30 min later 32936263 Anonymous
>>32936243
Again, how much does he have. You would need 6 digits to make a real difference on the market at this point.
31 min later 32936285 Anonymous
>>32936084
Difficulty isn't going to rise THAT quickly though. We won't see it getting unprofitable for at least 6 mo if the price doesn't crash.

Funny when a drop in the pond is about CAD $140,000, which was greater than the entirety of both markets less than 3 years ago.
He earned it though, bought 2k in gfx cards in 2011 / 2012 to mine.
Oh, another curiosity to entertain if you don't mind. We're considering starting a public pool, specifically for /g/ (though anyone would be free to join). Username would be the address to pay to, so no sign-up needed. We've done a little hacking on PoolServerJ, but are still a ways away from operating it.
Would any of you be interested if we did bring it up to operation?
43 min later 32936487 Anonymous
So lets say instead of mining like I have been doing, I want to buy.
So... to buy LTC right now I would need to use BTC-e right?
and for me to buy I first need to deposit money into BTC-e, using either:
interkassa.com
OKPAY
BitInstant
webmoney
liqpay
with half of those being Russian sites.
which site do I use...? and what if I just want to pay a small amount (say around $10) or is there a minimum?
I'm reading though the sites right now, they just seem a little... sketchy
43 min later 32936493 Anonymous

Do some research yourself, and decide if it's worth it or not.

Anyone using this thing in guiminer?

there is only one real p2pool.
whatever you're using is a proxy.
use the real one.

p2pool have no middleman
the only way the owner can get money from you is if you don't put your wallet address as the username when you connect
or
the fee is set to 100
he has no control over payments
also, that wallet address is going to someone else on a different node, unless it shows up on the graphs page, they aren't connected to the same node

This may be a dumb question but why didn't they implement stratum with p2pool? Wouldn't it earn more for everyone? A stale rate of 16% for the entire pool is really poor, hell, you'd likely earn better using a conventional pool.

You can't buy shit with PayPal. You always have to make compromises and pay a lot of fees and wait a long time in most cases, especially if you don't live in the US.

I'm stuck mining with my nvidia gtx 570 until I get a few cheap AMD cards. I am getting about 150kh/s right now. Anything I can do to boost my hash?
Also what is a good suggestion for a cheap AMD card?
10 hours later 32945248 Anonymous
>>32945081
Look at this then find whatever you can for as cheap as you can that's reasonable.
Protip: anything below 200 is rather poor hashrate. Might be a good idea to check the bitcoin hardware charts too, they're usually more detailed (give you a hash/J value, which is the card's power efficiency).
