I love me some "dumb phones" Great as backups, or things you take to places you wouldn't take a sheet of glass and electronics to. ie the beach, pubs, clubs and so on.

So now that Sony bought out Ericssons part in their company, does Ericsson still make phones? Back in the day pre-sony they made some nice "flip" phones. They could still be making them.

>>32344065 No, they're loosing money in the smarthphone department, they're still selling hundreds of millions of dumb phones to finance their piss poor attempt at smartphones.

Is there any smartphones that are purchasable outside of Japan with either this style or in a flip phone style? I don't really like touch screens, but it seems like that's about my only option nowadays in Canada. And no, I don't want a blackberry.

1 hours later 32346671 Anonymous
They sell these kind of phones in developing countries I think. I just did a quick search and there's no way to buy one here in Canada.

>>32346671 not just developing countries it's any place which has or has had a large market for cheap GSM phones which is everywhere except the US and canada mostly due to that market being over saturated with different phones.

I was going to use my old dumbphone until I realized it was thicker than my smartphone. My Motorola Milestone 1 is still chugging but I can't stand to use it for long periods of time since it's still running gingerbread.

Yeah, no. My mom bought a new dumbphone, a Nokia C5 or something, and it's dogshit. Battery lasts 2-3 days at most, it doesn't even have a notification light. Nokia's dumbphones are simply crap now.

as an iphone owner, i can say that is a nice phone ofc they go out of business next year

2 hours later 32347439 Anonymous
>>32347387 Just looking into it now, it seems like they've started using HSDPA, though they still aren't 100% compatible. Take http://www.kyoex.com/docomo-fujitsu -f-01e-high-spec-style-series-phone / for example. This phone is Unlocked to work outside of Japan (Calling / SMS texting), but the following features will NOT work outside of Japan 1. TV One-Seg Tuner (Japan specific TV tuner) 2. 3G Internet Data Transfer (MMS texting or Internet connection through your cellular provider) 3. Docomo i-mode GPS (Japan specific cellular GPS) If you wish to use internet or data transfer on this phone, you will need to connect using the Wifi So it seems like they will work now, just not perfectly. They used to not work at all outside Japan though.

>>32347422 Nokia will not go out of business, if they start failing someone will buy them, if only for their patents. I said this to /g/ last summer when the stock was around $1.60-1.80, and people were saying if it's worth buying. Now it's around $3.60-4, and has been since last autumn.

>>32347439 Man, that shit annoys me so much. I am in the market for a new phone, and a Japshit smart flip phone seems like it would be absolutely perfect for my usage, plus I think they look great, but I haven't been able to find one that would play too nice with the networks here. SMS and basic calling is the best I've been able to find, compatibility wise. What I really want is a Sharp SH-03E - pic related - but, once again, no dice on network support.
