Hey /g/ I'm looking for a place to live that isn't California (I hate this hell hole) with a booming technology industry and some good colleges with CS and CE programs. So I stumbled upon some interesting locations in North Carolina. One being the Research Triangle Park in Raleigh and the other being the city of Charlotte. Does /g/ have any input on these locations or maybe suggest some other places to consider?

>>32242740 don't listen to him, OP. I live in NC and you'll rather want to be in Charlotte. Raleigh Durham is a hell hole of ghetto as fuck niggers. Most people here have some since, though West virginia would prob be better because better unis and a short drive to D.C.

I'll look into Austin, it seems like a viable option. >>32242819 I looked at a crime map and it seems like the only place with a horrible crime rate is Durham, NC. Raleigh is gridlocked(at least I-40 and the surrounding areas) from 4-6pm every weekday. Charlotte has the worst drivers in the continental United States. If you're going to move to NC, move to Cary, it's just a 5 minute trip down the interstate to Raleigh and has fairly nice people for the most part. DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES LIVE ANYWHERE IN ROCKINGHAM COUNTY IF YOU PLAN ON COMMUTING, THE PLACE IS FILLED WITH ACTUAL EVIL AND WILL SUCK YOUR SOUL AWAY.

>>32243164 I was actually looking at houses in Cary, Morriseville, or Chapel Hill. They all look like very nice areas with respectable communities and within drinving distance to the 'RTP'. I've read the Cisco and Netapp are hiring and you seem familiar with the area, are these good places to work for?

>>32243192 If you are interested in Pitt check out the job postings on PittSource. At the NOC I work at we're looking for network engineers and NOC monitors (the people who respond to alerts and act as high-tier helpdesk). I'd like to get another Linux/Unix engineer but we didn't find one in a year and the position expired. I'm fucking swamped with work.

>>32243247 Pretty much anywhere in and around Raleigh is good for employment. I'd honestly avoid Cisco for the most part, simply because of all the horror stories and the weird pseudo-50s-IBM business culture they're currently trying to propagate.

There's always Kansas City. Google Fiber has brought an effort to bring in tech startups, plus Sprint is headquartered nearby.

>>32243440 No, I don't have a bachelors and I work here. My former boss had to argue with HR to hire me but it worked without too much fuss. If you do good during interviews you'll be fine. Hell, just apply online and take the phone interview. If you tell them "I can start next month" and they like you, you're in regardless of where you live now. Pittsburgh is fairly cheap living too. I rent a house for $875/month (previous was a $525/month apartment) though I'm planning on buying a house by the end of the year.

I wasn't a huge fan of the research triangle area. It was alright, but it was pretty boring. The Baltimore area is where its at. The city is cool, and there are a TON of technical jobs between here and DC/NOVA. I used to live in San Francisco, but I moved here for more challenging technical jobs, and there are plenty out here. University of Maryland has a top notch CS program.

>>32244532 Is the RTP everything that it is worked up to be? Why does everyone hate Durham? What is the nicest area to live in near the RTP. (I'm hearing Cary) Will the area be a big culture shock for me? Are there an interesting places to visit in the state while I'm there? (I'll probably rent a car). The mountains and beach look interesting and they appear to only be two hour drives. Are people generally friendly? Judging from the guys in the thread from the area, it seems that way.

Raleigh is nice around the NCSU area (some exceptions around Hillsborough Street). Wouldn't recommend Durham, personally, but I haven't spent much time there. I always hear it's shit. Cary is pretty nice. Lots of residential areas and commercially developed areas. There's a nice mall, Barnes and Noble, lots of nice restaurants, etc.
